Best era-adjusted Defensive Teams over [1,3,4,5,6,9]-season windows

Similar to the previous topic on overall (RS + Playoffs) SRS (viewtopic.php?f=64&t=2361019), but now including opponent scoring efficiency (DRtg) and season outcomes (except for the last window as the formatting doesn't fit). In this topic we are looking at average DRtg (μDR) and standardized DRtg (zDR) (# of standard deviations above opponent mean) over the specified seasons. Teams from both the NBA and ABA are included and are from 1954 onwards.

Showing top-30 teams only for each window, except the single season which is top-200, and this time no teams with overlapping season-windows, otherwise the 50/60's Boston would just dominate the list .

What stood out to me:

• 83 WSB: missing out on the playoffs despite their epic defence - Who was anchoring their defence, Rick Mahorn and Jeff Ruland? Who is Jeff Ruland?? Both B. Jones and K. McHale made NBA All-Defense over Mahorn despite play way less minutes, did he get snubbed? DET adding him later in the decade seems just unfair, though getting rid of Tripucka might of helped more.
• 90s NYK: really should have at least one title with this defence, oh well.
• Late 00's HOU: Surprised how good Houston was on defence despite injuries plaguing Yao Ming.
• 19-22 MIL: They really are all-timers on defence. Who should get more credit, Brook or Giannis?
• 77-81 PHO: Look very good, I have no clue who was anchoring their defense, anyone have any comments on this?
• LeBron & Jordan: LeBron faced absolute defensive juggernauts, DET, BOS, ORL, CHI, IND, SAS, GSW. Jordan less, DET, NYK and MIA, but the first two were arguablably the greatest defensive teams after the 60s BOS.

I haven't looked into what's happening, but probably the code to remove overlapping season-windows (for instance, for 3-season windows such as '93-95', '94-96', only show the one with the best score and remove the other one) was active for the single-season scores. Quick (double-checking) question: I see the 70s Bucks appearing in the single year list, 3 year list, and 5 year list. Pretty much as expected -- they're one of the most dominant teams of all time! But they're missing from the 4 year, 6 year, and 9-year windows. Is that perhaps a typo or is there a bug in the code? I could definitely understand by the time we get to a 9-year window, their lower years without Kareem could pull them down. But I find it somewhat surprising that they could be 6th all time in a 3-year window, 8th all time in a 5-year window, then be missing from the entire top 30 in a four year window.

Quick methodology question: What source are you using for defensive rating, basketball reference or thinking basketball? As I recall, thinking basketball has slightly more accurate pace measurements, so that might make a slight difference, but basketball reference is free and perhaps more easily scrapable, which is a definite advantage.
Also, does this include playoffs or just regular season? If it does include playoffs, you might also get some changes based on the weighting (e.g. do you treat playoffs as a equally weighted game when finding the full-season average, give playoff games extra weight, give it a set percentage of weight regardless of the number of playoff games, etc.).

As for my other thoughts: while something like a 3-year window is perhaps nicest as it blends granularity of detail with a larger sample size like eminence says, I'm more interested here in the larger windows from 4–9 years, if only because it's so rare to see team stats posted for larger windows!

Looking just at the top teams across these larger timespan windows:
1. the 60s Celtics are in a league of their own, as expected. Being over 4 standard deviations above the mean in 4–5 year windows, over 3.5 standard deviations above the mean out to 9 year windows, with an actual relative rating of over -8.5 even in a 9 year run.

In 4-6 year windows, there's a clear next top 3 of:
-80s/90s Pistons (2nd best in smaller 4 year samples, worse in larger samples, fall out of the top 30 in 9-year window)
-Late 90s/early 00s Duncan/Robinson Spurs (who are below the Pistons in the smaller samples, but rise up in larger samples)
-90s Knicks

After them, the longer time windows tend to converge on
-00s/10s KG Celtics
-10s Spurs (worse than Celtics out to 6-year window, but pass them in 9)
-00s Pistons

Really it's a lot of the usual suspects. I'm a big surprised the 80s/90s Pistons are 2nd in 3-4 year windows. I didn't picture them as more dominant defensively than the Duncan/Robinson Spurs. I'm also surprised the KG Celtics beat the 10s Spurs and the 00s Pistons even out to a 6-year window. Neat!

In the smaller 4-year window you get the
-Giannis Bucks
-Curry Warriors
-Jordan Bulls
sneaking into this tier, but they fall slightly lower in the longer samples. We'll see how the Bucks look as time goes on. The Warrior dynasty are presumably held back from longer runs by their *massive* dip in 2020.

One other point: it looks like you use standard deviation for your default order and to set your top 30 filter, rather than the actual relative score. Not that there's anything inherently wrong with that, but I'd be interested in hearing why! Naively, my default preference is to prefer the raw score if I'm using it to do some sort of 'Top 30 rank' (while keeping the standard deviations handy since there are clearly cases where the STD is informative).
One example where I think the raw score does better than the standard deviation: single-year window, top 3 teams. I would *absolutely* take the 1964 Celtics defensively over the 1957 or 1059 Celtics. Russell himself is clearly better, and I wouldn't say the supporting cast got worse defensively. Looking at playoffs only, the 1964 Celtics definitely look best. And indeed looking at the raw score, the 64 Celtics trounce the 57/59 Celtics (and everyone else lol... they're at -12.68 to the 57/59 Celtics' -7.35/-7.36). But in the STD, the 50s iterations pass the 64 team. To me, that's just a case of the 50s teams playing in a clearly weaker and more parity-filled league defensively.
I'm sure you could find counterexamples where the standard deviation does better at ranking than the raw score though -- It would be interesting to hear your thoughts either way!

The league-average DRtg in the 60's is very different than let's say 1980s and especially now in the '20s. Let's say league-average DRtg is 100 in 1990 and 110 in 2024. Being -5 DRtg is more impressive in 1990 right?

This is what I hope to identify better using this approach, but also actual outliers relative to the rest of the league. For example, consider these 2 cases of two similar 4-team leagues.
Case 1: One team has a DRtg of -10, and the rest of the league (three teams) has an average of 100, and are 95, 100, and 105.
Case 2: One team also has a DRtg of -10, and the rest of the league also has an average of 100, but 99, 100, and 101 respectively.
I think it's clear that despite in both cases team one has the same relative DRtg, but using standard deviations makes it very clear that it's way more impressive in case 2.

You are absolutely correct that this is potential pitfall of doing era-adjustment, especiallly in seasons where the total number of teams is very small. In genral, the smaller your sample size, the larger the standard deviation and chance of "flukey" seasons where teams are just weak. Using 1957 and 1964 seasons are great examples to illustrate this!

The gap in raw relative DRtg is indeed massive.

So it comes down to variance / standard deviation of the respective single-season. I think this is the nature of having relatively few teams in a league, and like you say "clearly weaker and more parity-filled league defensively." You can argue the 1959 Celtics were just more dominant, defensively at least, compared to their '64 counterpart. However, I do agree the 1964 are should probably be considered more impressive, even if we are adjusting for era. I mean 1959 and 1964 are not that far apart, although as we have seen the past 5 years ORtg has been increasing like crazy.

So what can we do if we still want to era-adjustments? We can expand the opposition cohort by adding the surrounding two-seasons. In the case for 1959, add 1958 and 1960 and for 1964, add 1963 and 1965! This way we manage to smoothed the variance of a single-season by adding additional data-points from the surrounding two seasons and this is what we get:

70s Bucks missing.. this was indeed a bug! The algorithm I got from ChatGPT to exclude overlapping season-windows was removing too many entries , this is fixed now. 70s Bucks is now present in the 4, 6, and 9-season windows. Great catch. Updated all the season-windows now to include the top-100.

Source is both. Elgee / Ben Taylor from Thinking Basketball shared a spreadsheet on this forum when he was still active here with relative NBA playoff ORtg/DRtg from 1952-2014. I supplemented this using RS relative ORtg/DRtg from basketball-reference, as well as PS from 2014 onwards. ABA playoffs I used TS% and opponent TS% as a surrogate for ORtg and DRtg, respectively.

As you know already, playoffs games are weighted 10x more than regular season games. Just chose this cause 10 is a nice round number and to emphasize playoff ratings. 8 playoff games would more or less equally weigh with the RS then.

Moonbeam did a study in the top 100 which found standard deviation correlated more strongly with championships than srs though I think he predicted that srs gaps at the top of the league would correlate even better.
