Why never any mention of why the Jazz traded Dominique ...

Post#1 » by JordansBulls » Tue Aug 25, 2009 3:59 pm

Why is their never any mention of why the Utah Jazz traded the #3 pick in 1982 which was Dominique Wilkins for John Drew and Freeman Williams.

June 29, 1982: Drafted by the Utah Jazz in the 1st round (3rd pick) of the 1982 NBA Draft.

September 2, 1982: Traded by the Utah Jazz to the Atlanta Hawks for John Drew and Freeman Williams.

The Jazz basically traded him 2 months later.

In 1985 the Jazz got Karl Malone and in 1984 they got John Stockton. Now both of those guys were in the teens for picks so they could have had a trio of Malone, Stockton and Nique.

At that time, John Drew and Freeman Williams were actually decent players, proven commodities who can score, while Nique was a huge unknown.

These kinds of trades happen all the time (See: Battier for Gay)

John Drew was a 21 ppg 7 rpg player whose career was cut short because of drug problems at the age of 30. There are much worse trades in NBA history, plus it happened quite a long time ago, so people rarely mention it, if ever.

The Jazz also got a lot of money in the trade which helped them survive as a franchise. With out it they would have gone under.

Bat is correct. That trade kept the organization afloat financially.

Now it makes more sense.

not only that, but a lot of these questions stem from a "what if x and y played together" scenario. In this case, it's not feasible to assume the Jazz still get Stockton or Malone, so there's not much to question, it was just another win-now trade.

Well those guys were like the 13th and 16th pick.

Did you ever see John Drew play ? The man could stroke it like no other, the only thing that derailed him was drugs.
