Coach Snyder selling as hard as he can, the virtues of unselfishness and coming off the bench.

To this point in the season, Bey has started three games at power forward and Johnson has started two. Snyder has indicated that his choice of starter isn't the be-all and end-all. The bigger issue – and the one that swings in the Hawks' favor – is that they get 48 minutes of solid play at that spot.

"There was never a question, for me, about the (power forward) position," Snyder said. "Meaning that we have some good players there. People get fixated on starting. It is what it is. If you go watch a game in Europe, they start different lineups all the time and no one thinks anything of it. People get fixated on rotations. If you looked at our rotation the other night, it was all over the place, because that's what the game dictated. I think, particularly in Saddiq and Jalen's case because they've both started games, they haven't thought about it the way the general public thinks about it. They haven't thought about it the way the PA announcer thinks about it when he announces them. And that's refreshing, because I think it shows their commitment to the bottom line, which is not the stat sheet. It's the wins. They're doing everything they can (to win games)."

This is the most commonly used starting 5 in the early part of the season.

I'd like to see us start Saddiq at SF next to Jalen at PF and move DeAndre...to another team.

Saddiq is really bad defensively.

Bey's defense is, admittedly, underwhelming.

But the Capela-Jalen-Saddiq-Dejounte-Trae lineup has the best Net Rating of any lineup used for 10 minutes or more.

They have a red-hot 133 Offensive Rating, a stingy 108 defensive rating for a NET RATING of +25.
This lineup deserves to be explored a bit more.

Swap Okongwu in for Capela and that 5-man group is even more impressive!!!

Lineups with advanced stats from the Detroit Game that Trae missed.

Biggest Takeaway: The starting five of Dejounte/Bogdan/Hunter/Jalen/Capela was terrible defensively. Allowed a 118 Defensive Rating!!

Hunter is trending back to the player we're use to seeing. His field goal percentage has been bad and he's not being productive at all. Maybe one day we can acquire some value for him because I don't think he's going to develop into what we hoped for.

It's really frustrating that in between 2 salary dumps, DeAndre Hunter somehow got a fat extension that he seems unlikely to live up to.

DeAndre Hunter is the highest drafted Atlanta Hawk since AL Horford -- and he's barely a league average starter. :banghead:

This, IMO, is Travis Schlenk's greatest misfire.

A week later......Yep still on board with Bey at SF in lieu of Hunter. Costly TOs in the Pacers game and no hustle. Plus this:

Hawks starting five is the problem. They are sub par offensively and it's leading to bad starts consistently.

Ranking Every NBA Team's Starting Lineup So Far

20. Atlanta Hawks

Image

  • Trae Young
  • Dejounte Murray
  • De'Andre Hunter
  • Jalen Johnson
  • Clint Capela

This ranking feels a touch too low for the perpetually mediocre Hawks, but the numbers won't let it climb any higher. Atlanta's first five has landed in the red (minus-2.1 net rating), and its offense is actually to blame.

Now, you could frame that as a good thing, since the Hawks have routinely ranked as one of the Association's better attacks throughout Young's tenure. However, Capela and Hunter don't offer creation, Johnson's career rates are dubious of his strong shooting start (60.8/44.1/73.1) and Young's shooting marks have failed to impress since Murray's arrival.

If these five keep defending at a high level (110.2 defensive rating, would rank ninth), they might make this ranking look low in hindsight. However, there are reasons to believe they could regress on that end and reasons to wonder whether this offense can come alive in ways to offset that.

We dump salary to only put ourselves back in a similar situation with Hunter who appears to only be a role player. Which, is why I hope his value increases, so we eventually move him, so more of his field goal attempts go to Jalen Johnson, if he continues to prove he's worthy of more.

If only it was Hunter that was traded and not Huerter. A Bogi/Huerter combo off the bench would do wonders for us.

Return to Atlanta Hawks
