Predicting Atlanta's Best Starting/Closing lineups

Image

Starters: Trae Young, Dejounte Murray, De'Andre Hunter, Saddiq Bey and Clint Capela

This lineup only started two games last season, but it feels like a safe bet in the absence of John Collins, who was moved to the Utah Jazz this summer.

Young or Murray can initiate two-man actions in the middle of the floor with Capela, while surrounded by decent shooting from Hunter and Bey.

Closers: Trae Young, Dejounte Murray, Bogdan Bogdanović, AJ Griffin and Onyeka Okongwu

This group may have a bit of playmaking overload with Young, Murray and Bogdanović, but that adds to the team's unpredictability. It can be hard to keep a solid defensive rotation when the opposition can initiate from three positions.

It also features a forward who may be the team's most consistent shooter in AJ Griffin, who shot 39.0 percent from three as a rookie, and a more switchable defender in Okongwu at the 5.

At this point, I'm onboard with Okongwu and Jalen entering the starting unit together...whenever that happens.

And bringing Jalen off then bench probably lowers the number he'll accept on his inevitable extension.

Brilliant!!!

Makes more sense to have the better play maker creating for the backups, while DeJounte gets the benefit of running more with the starters.

This year, we need Jalen, OO, or both to breakout. I hope one becomes a superstar talent and that's probably Jalen.

They gotta keep JJ and OO around Trae. You can throw Bey/Bogi/AJ in the mix with them but Capela and Hunter aren't good enough athletes to play with the current backcourt.

Also coming to the conclusion the Trae-DJM backcourt just won't work. They don't compliment each other well enough unfortunately.

Yikes. I knew Clint looked out of place in this new Quin Snyder offense, but this is atrocious...

Interesting tactic by Quin Snyder to alter the starting PF from game-to-game based on matchups.

Quin Snyder has the team looking like the talented team that it is. I think that things will get even better

Any explanation for AJ's minutes drop-off? From 19mpg to 9mpg...

From last season;
Bogi was out the first 25 games of last season.
Hunter missed some games.
Traded for Bey at the deadline last year.
When Quin was hired, Jalen Johnson immediately started getting more minutes. It was a roster squeeze.
AJ did hit a bit of a wall after the Allstar break after going to Vegas.

This year:
So far Quin is playing mostly an 8 man rotation to install his new offense and defense, more read and react and movement vs Nate's heavy PnR and ISO. AJ is adjusting.
