NBA Power Rankings

20. Atlanta Hawks (29-30)

Net Rating: -0.5

After losing to the New York Knicks on Wednesday, the Atlanta Hawks fell to 5-8 in their last 13 and slipped into the bottom 10 of the net-rating leaderboard.

And while it might be tempting to point to the big offseason acquisition of Dejounte Murray as the culprit for mediocrity, Atlanta's starting five is actually quite strong.

The Hawks are plus-12.6 points per 100 possessions (97th percentile) when Trae Young, Murray, De'Andre Hunter, John Collins and Clint Capela are on the floor.

They get into serious trouble when the bench starts filtering in. When at least one of those starters is off the floor, the net rating plummets to minus-3.2.

It has not changed for ATL because Collins didn't play in the CLE game
But BOS and MIN have improve their lineups at +13.2 and 12.9 now

Ranking Every NBA Starting Lineup

14. Atlanta Hawks

Image

  • Trae Young
  • Dejounte Murray
  • De'Andre Hunter
  • John Collins
  • Clint Capela

As tempting as it might be to blame the Atlanta Hawks' starting five for the team's overall mediocrity, that's one of the few things that's undeniably working.

As anticipated, Dejounte Murray has helped cover for some of Trae Young's defensive deficiencies. The playmaking split between those two hasn't been quite as tricky as some expected, either. Rim-running center Clint Capela is helping to pull defensive attention toward the rim.

If there is a concern, it might be the average three-point percentage of De'Andre Hunter (35.9 percent) and the way-below-average mark of John Collins (24.8 percent), but that isn't causing much of a problem in the plus-minus column.

The Hawks are plus-12.6 points per 100 possessions when their starters are on the floor.

We gave up 5 second round picks for Bey and he shoots less than ten field goal attempts a game.

Bey and Griffin are the best shooters on the team

Paying John Collins between $23-$27 million per season and here are his shot attempts the last four games, 4, 6, 8, and 8.

At practice Wednesday, Hawks coach Quin Snyder said that the team is in a blessed, as well as cursed, position because of the depth it has on the roster. He noted that it is uncommon for teams to run a 10-man or 11-man rotation because of the limited minutes to go around.

Snyder said that as the team moves forward, based on matchups there could be nights where they turn to Jalen Johnson, and there could be nights where they need Griffin. So while they understand Griffin’s position, they also know that this is an opportunity for him to power through the challenge.

Hopefully, this is just the after effects of John being in concussion protocol last week and having a minutes restriction.

Otherwise, there is no excuse for this to still be an issue.

Possibly.

Here are his makes/attempts in those games.

Portland 3/4
Washington 3/6
Brooklyn 5/8
New York 2/8

Out of his last eight games, he has only shot below .50% twice, and he shot over .60% four times.

Trying to predict Atlanta's Lineup of Death for the 2024 season.

This one has shooting, frontcourt defense, passing and ballhandling...

But lacks rebounding...

My guess he was signed to an E10 contract to be waived to joined the Skyhawks. It's standard procedure to have GL signing rights.
