John Collins Appreciation Thread

Thanks for 6 seasons. Developing from a mid 1st rd pick into a 20 and 10 guy who helped lead the franchise to a conference finals. Played through trade rumors for 3 years.

Dude is gonna tear it up in Utah. I can't believe we are still grasping to the 80s and 90s concept of a 5 in Capela.

They were trying to trade him in his rookie deal. And he took less money to stay

Re: John Collins Traded to Utah Jazz

In a deal that delivers the franchise dramatic financial flexibility, the Atlanta Hawks are trading forward John Collins to the Utah Jazz, sources told ESPN on Monday.

The Hawks are acquiring forward Rudy Gay and a future second-round pick for Collins, who is owed $78 million over the next three seasons, sources said. The swap creates a $25.3 million trade exception for the Hawks -- the largest in the NBA. Atlanta has a year to potentially use the exception to take on a player's contract.

The deal to acquire Collins, 25, brings the Jazz a versatile forward to play on a front line with All-Star Lauri Markkanen and All-Rookie center Walker Kessler. Also, Utah used the ninth pick in Thursday's NBA Draft to select Taylor Hendricks, a power forward out of Central Florida. The Jazz were an offensive revelation under first-year coach Will Hardy, and Collins' arrival could help Utah return to the Western Conference playoffs next season.

For Atlanta, the acquisition of Gay -- who exercised his $6.4 million player option for next season as part of the trade, his agent Sam Permut of Roc Nation Sports told ESPN -- allows the Hawks to drop far below the $182.5 million second apron and beneath the $165 million luxury tax threshold for the 2023-24 season.

Nevertheless, the Hawks are expected to remain in deal-making mode this offseason, and ownership has given general manager Landry Fields the OK to move into the luxury tax should it be necessary to improve the roster, sources said.

The departure of Collins also gives Atlanta a fuller opportunity to navigate possible contract extensions for three young core players: Dejounte Murray, Onyeka Okongwu and Saddiq Bey.

What? The trade talk didn't start until at least the very end of his rook deal...or actually later

He did not take less to stay with the Hawks... Show me who offered him more

We're losing the heart and leader of the Hawks locker room...for cap flexibility. :banghead:

Well wishes from true Hawk fans, but this was needed from a roster and now salary standpoint. Schlenk got the team into this mess, and now the financial flexibility is realized again.

Yes, they were looking to trade him instead of giving him the rookie extension, and yes he could’ve asked for more money because Atlanta didn’t want to lose him for nothing. He was coming off back to back 20 and 10 seasons.

The only positive thing is that I prefer to get Gay than Vanderbilt and Beasley like the rumored trade from last season (especially if it was costing a 1st with Collins).

Now, I just hope that he will be used correctly, and that ATL will play correctly because if John get back to his level or is at least used correctly and ATL end up not being better next season, it will be a real slap in the face of this franchise after trading 2 guys for financial reasons only just after making the ECF

I don't think Schlekn left us a messy cap at all. It was the moves by Landry and Nick that messed things up.

Hawks made a miracle run to the ECF, Schlenk managed to get the principles of that starting 5 committed for years to come at solid deal numbers.

But bad coaching by Nate, caused that starting unit to falter and cratered the trade value of every player on the roster.

Then, Landry adding DeJounte and Bey just before they reach FA and inexplicably extending 30 year old Bogdan Bogdan left the team brushing up against the luxury tax.

NOTE: Collins + Huerter only combine for around $40+ million per season. That's solid value for two starters on a playoff team just entering their prime.

The whole Capela holding back Collins is BS but anybody who really believes in that, then Collins will have to deal with Kessler who is another version of Capela, and Kessler is going to get serious minutes in 2024

So lets see if Collins "tears it up" playing along side of Kessler but not Capela...

Danny Ainge fleecing Hawks is great offseason entertainment for Knicks fans

This time last year, Danny Ainge was shaping up to be the New York Knicks’ fanbase’s No. 1 villain. New York fans don’t have to worry about doing business with Ainge this offseason, which is good news. Instead, fans can now sit back and watch the executive successfully fleece other teams, specifically the Hawks.

On Monday afternoon, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that Atlanta traded John Collins to Utah for Rudy Gay and a second-round pick. John Collins trade rumors have been floating around for what feels like 10 years now...Atlanta was able to open up a $25.3 million trade exception by dumping Collins’ contract, but it was for a measly return. Once upon a time, the Hawks were demanding a first-round pick in return for Collins, which is part of the reason why he remained in Atlanta for as long as he did. The Hawks watched his trade value take a significant dip, so much so that none other than Danny Ainge was able to capitalize on Atlanta’s incompetence.

The Hawks just got Danny Ainge’d. For Knicks fans, it couldn’t have happened to a better team.

This is a crazy low return for someone like Collins, and the deal, first reported by ESPN, feels like a steal for the Jazz.

...the Hawks ended up signing him in the summer of 2021 for five years and $125 million. After two years in that contract, the best they could do for him was a 36-year old Rudy Gay and a second-round pick? That can’t possibly be proper value, whether or not you believe in Collins.

This is a terrible job of maximizing value for a player who should still be an asset. This still feels like even a weak salary dump. We’ll see how much of this roster gets moved in the coming weeks. Clint Capela, De’Andre Hunter and many more not named Trae Young could all be moved. Even for a salary dump, the Collins deal is a complete miss on its own. We have to see what’s next.
