So much has changed in the last 18 months for the Hawks young core.

Collins, Reddish, Huerter have all been traded away (for modest returns). But a new crop of young'ns has emerged with some serious potential.

So who's the top players under 23 for this team?

You're going to like him, dude. He, AJ and Bufkin honestly probably make DeJounte expendable.

It's not that I don't like him. I just don't see much beyond him becoming just a good backup PG. On the flipside, I think someone like Vit just needs an opportunity. Lundy doesn't have a ton of upside, but he's got an elite skill as a shooter at least. Gueye/Usman are raw, but both have a lot of upside. Usman in particular. The top 4 is just all upside from here.

I'm going to have to do a tier thing

OO because he has already established himself as a starter worthy player

JJ / AJ because I see both of these guys having potential to be starters soon

Bufkin I would have put him with JJ / AJ but rookie

Gueye / Usman / Lundy / Tyty I'm just going to put all these guys together. I really like the two bigs. Lundy could turn into what Heurter was supposed to be and Tyty has every chance to be a solid back up PG

Vit... we'll see

If I squint I could see these guys as the product of a three year rebuild with a lot of potential. If QS and the Hawks get totally serious and efficient at development, a few of these guys could be a big part of the Hawks in the coming years

When you think that these guys are developing behind a solid group of:

Trae / Murray / Bogy / hunter / Bey / CC it's really something to look forward to. All but Bogy and CC are young to very young

Ranking Atlanta's 3 Most Promising Prospects

1. Onyeka Okongwu
Opportunity seems to be the only thing standing in the way of a full-fledged breakout for Okongwu, and it might be knocking soon with Clint Capela on the trade block. Save for an outside jumper, Okongwu has just about everything you'd want in a modern big. He is immensely switchable on defense and reliable around the rim. This past season, he tallied the 10th-most blocks (107) and sixth-best field-goal percentage (63.8).

2. Jalen Johnson
Johnson needs to accelerate his development to justify this ranking, but I'm comfortable betting on his tools and talent, especially with power forward minutes readily available after the John Collins deal. Johnson is an explosive athlete with intriguing off-the-dribble abilities for a 6'9", 220-pounder.

3. AJ Griffin
Kobe Bufkin and Saddiq Bey have arguments for this spot, but Griffin arguably offers the best blend of floor and ceiling. He is a knockdown shooter from distance—he shot 39 percent from range as a rookie—and he can zip around close-outs then finish in myriad ways off the bounce.

I will say that we are lucky to have gotten lottery caliber talent outside the top-14 picks for three straight years. That's a combination of good drafting and good luck this franchise never used to have.

We just have to do a better job of moving these guys for value when the time comes. In recent years we've lost Cam, Huerter and Collins for little in return. Before that, Hawks lost AL and Josh Smith for nothing in Free Agency.

We have to manage our assets and young prospects better.

Especially when you consider we gifted away 9 total draft picks for DeJounte Murray and Saddiq Bey.
