What are we doing?
Trent can't play anymore NBA games. Release him.
Sign Norris back to a 2way and call him up.
Release Wes or Patty and Sign Silva to a 10 day.

Hawks are still one of the lowest valued franchises in the NBA.

Lauren Williams AJC Beat Writer On Local Radio 92.9 The Game:

1. Talks injuries

2. Possibilty of Calling up MoG or AJ...haven't been called up and team is already out west

3. Windler can only play 11 NBA games, smh (has already played 39 with other NBA clubs). Why we signed him to a 2way.

4. Will we hang on to the 10th spot? It will be tough. Will Hunter move back into the starting lineup?

5. Trae - will Trae return if we make playin? Trae will most likely want to play as long as he has mobility in his hand and has cleared all protocols.

6. Didn't have as much depth as they advertised once JJ was injured.

7. Hawks have individual talented players, they just can't seem to get it right playing with each other and with any consistency (they like each other off the court and get along well). They just lack size on wing and center.

8. Quin talks about lack of size often, mostly by referencing other teams size we have to go up against them on the wings and front court.

9. Quin believes in Trae and DJ and wants to make it work with them.

10. Need an annoying guy on the team.

I originally expected us to acquire Donovan Mitchell than Murray because everything seemed to be falling into line. However, I don't believe Donovan would work, just like with Murray doesn't see to be working.

Brunson and Luka didn't work and there are many other combinations that haven't.

Who do we need to stand behind and who should we move?

A few thoughts on Atlanta’s post All-Star break form

The Battle for Points In The Paint
Prior to the All-Star break, the points in the paint battle was not one that typically played out in Atlanta’s favor. The Hawks ranked 14th in points in the paint per game (51.6), 28th in points allowed in the paint per game (56.0), and outscored their opponents in this area by more than five points just ten times through the first 55 games of the season — winning six out of those ten games.

On the offensive end, Atlanta did a good job generating shots from this area of the floor (ranking seventh in the league in paint-field goal attempts), however their efficiency left a lot to be desired, as they were just 27th in paint FG%*. On the defensive end, their rim protection was a disaster, ranking dead last in the league in field goal attempts allowed in the restricted area and 25th in opponent restricted area FG% — the main culprit of their shoddy paint defense.

Since the All-Star break however, the Hawks have outscored their opponents in the paint by 5+ ppg in six out of their last thirteen games played -- winning five out of these six games. [T]he offense hasn’t been the primary reason why they have won the paint battle more often as of late; it’s been Atlanta’s defense that’s been the driving factor behind their recent success in this area, as the Hawks have ranked sixth in opponent FG% in the restricted area, and 11th in points allowed in the paint per game* (48.0) since the break.

Missed Bunnies Continue To Plague The Offense
I referenced Atlanta’s woeful interior finishing in the section above, and this has been an area of the floor that has plagued their offense all season long.

The Hawks rank 27th in rim shooting accuracy, converting 62.7% of their shots at the rim this season per pbpstats. And they’ve been worse since the All-Star break, converting a measly 60.8% of their shot-attempts at the rim — the third lowest mark in the league.

Looking at the individual player’s rim shooting numbers in the tables above, you can see that Clint Capela and Dejounte Murray have been the two main culprits when it comes to Atlanta’s struggles from this area as of late. These two have accounted for roughly 41% of the team’s total shot attempts at the rim since the All-Star break, and yet theyare converting them at a combined 54.7% clip. Not pretty, to say the least.

While some of Atlanta’s misses have simply been head-scratchers where they do everything right but the finish, there’s also no denying that they have sincerely missed Oyneka Okongwu’s impact in this area. Not only is Okongwu the most efficient scorer out of Atlanta’s centers, but he is also the best passer in the group as well.

De’Andre Hunter Looking Confident As A Scorer
After starting in 224 out of his first 230 games in the NBA, De’Andre Hunter has come off the bench in his last 20 games for the Hawks after returning from a knee injury — a shift that he has taken in stride.

Over his first 24 games of the season (all starts), Hunter averaged 14.9 points per game, shooting 46% from the floor (on 11 attempts per-game) and 40.4% from three (on 4.8 attempts per game) in 30.3 minutes a night.

Since coming off the bench, he’s averaged 16 points per game, while shooting 49.1% from the floor (on 11.2 attempts per-game) and 42% from three (on five attempts per-game) in 26.1 minutes a night. Coming off the bench has allowed him to play more of his minutes against opposing team’s bench units, and his confidence as a scorer seems to have soared as a result.

While his jump shot has fallen a bit more often in recent weeks, the area that’s most impressed me about Hunter’s game recently has been the improvement in his rim-finishing.

Finally, someone nailed it:

Goals for the Atlanta Hawks Down the Stretch

Determine the Staying Power of Non-Stars

Image

Apologies to all who celebrate swings at low-hanging fruit, but the "Should the Atlanta Hawks choose between Dejounte Murray and Trae Young?" conversation no longer moves me. Their primary goal isn't getting to the bottom of that question because they already know the answer.

Young's absence following left pinkie finger surgery reinforced what we all knew: Atlanta's defense will improve without him, but its peak on the less glamorous end is neither high enough nor sustainable enough to prop up "The Hawks are better sans Young" diatribes. Ditto for an offense run by Murray.

If Atlanta wants to move off Young over the summer, it signals a rebuild and not a recalibration.

Questions regarding the non-stars are more pressing. Jalen Johnson has entrenched himself as part of the core, and the Murray-or-Young-or-both discourse is a circular debate. What about everyone else?

  • Has De'Andre Hunter cemented himself as part of the future? Is he best suited coming off the bench? Will his mid-range jumper fast become the new normal?
  • What is Onyeka Okongwu to this team? Clint Capela's heir apparent? A backup? Trade asset? Someone they don't actually trust to play the 5?
  • Is Vít Krejčí's defense officially a thing?
  • Is there a place for (a healthy) Kobe Bufkin and his defensive tenacity inside a rotation that includes both Murray and Young?
  • Is A.J. Griffin a retainable project the Hawks remain invested in who'd be playing more if not for a lower leg injury? Or is he more trade-sweetener with no clear path to playing time on this roster?
Atlanta cannot answer all these questions in full. It needs Young back first, and even then, its intel will be incomplete with Saddiq Bey's ACL injury ending his season.

However, the goal should nevertheless be to render long-term verdicts on as many non-stars as possible before the end of this season.

Garrison Mathews joins the show 92.9 The Game after another huge Hawks win

He talks:

1. The wins vs Cs and the 4 game win streak

2. Defense - Quin wants them in the right shifts, contests and getting back in transition

3. His Garry Bird nickname

4. DJ and Bogi

5. Coach Quin - he is so smart, he remembers everything, very detail oriented. The stuff he has them doing on offense and defense took sometime to implement his style of play with his guys. It'sa really good offense and defense and it's taken a little bit to really buy in and to really grasp what they are doing. He thinks they are finally starting to grasp and understand it. He is One-Of-A-Kind. Quins biggest trait is the confidence he instills in the players.

A great listen:
