This dude is rising up my draft board.

Imagine having another 20ppg scorer, in his prime, on a rookie contract.

That's a hugely valuable asset -- either on the roster or in trade.

NBA Draft prospects to watch during March Madness

Dalton Knecht, 6-7 senior forward, Tennessee

A late bloomer who transferred in from Northern Colorado and has taken the SEC by storm, Dalton Knecht hung a 40-burger on Kentucky in a losing effort Saturday, and while he wasn’t super-efficient about it (29 shot attempts and four turnovers), he’s wielded his scoring scalpel much more effectively in other SEC contests. Knecht’s stats in conference games are almost Maravichian: 45.7 points per 100, 42.4 percent from 3, 60.3 percent true shooting, 31.7 PER.

Those 3-point shooting numbers are particularly impressive given the volume and difficulty. As Plan A, B and C for every opposing defense, Knecht makes attempts that are often contested looks off the dribble or running catch-and-shoots flying off pin-downs. Squint and you can see Klay Thompson.

Knecht’s shot has more of a line-drive trajectory than you’d prefer, and his 73.4 percent mark from the line indicates that his current 3-point percentage might be at the high end of what we should expect long term. But movement shooters who can connect at anywhere near this rate are hugely valuable in the NBA — the New Orleans Pelicans’ Jordan Hawkins, for instance, was a 2023 lottery pick based almost entirely off this skill, and he doesn’t have anywhere near the physical profile or shot-creation skill of Knecht.

The question now for scouts is basically one of “How high?” in terms of where Knecht’s shooting skill will put him in the NBA next year, but teams will be watching his lateral movement closely to see how well he can hold up as a wing defender.
As an older player who will be 23 on draft night, Knecht also will be evaluated through the lens of being four years older than most of the players who will go in the top 20.

Tennessee may get a rematch with Kentucky in the SEC tournament this week, and regardless should be no worse than a No. 2 seed for the NCAA Tournament.

The best scorer in college basketball?

Dalton Knecht | 6-6 wing | 23 years old | Tennessee

It took a long time for people to recognize how much Knecht torched SEC play this season. He scored at a staggering pace, averaging 25.5 points in 18 SEC games while shooting 48.4 percent from the field and 42.4 percent from 3. For the season, he’s averaging 20.1 points per game on 48 percent from the field, but those stats are dragged down by a stretch where he played at less than 100 percent following an ankle injury suffered against North Carolina. If you remove those games, Knecht is averaging 25 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.1 assists. He was the clear SEC Player of the Year and will be an All-American at the end of the year.

Great college players aren’t always great NBA players, but the style of the 23-year-old Knecht’s game makes him a potential lottery pick. Everything he does offensively should translate to NBA settings. Not only is he is a terrific shooter proficient in spot-up situations and off movement, but he’s also a higher-end athlete than most floor spacers who can sky in transition and finish inside with hang time. He simply has a knack for scoring.

The issues come on defense, as Knecht is rough around the edges and consistently makes errors that lead to problems for Tennessee. But I tend to buy into late bloomers like him, especially those who can really shoot and possess legitimate NBA athleticism.

Tim Hardaway Jr. seems like the most reasonable outcome...maybe Cam Thomas.

Bogdan Bogdanovic caliber scorer is his ceiling.

Players with the most to gain in March Madness

Dalton Knecht, Wing, Tennessee

Knecht enters the NCAA tournament as the feel good story of the college basketball season. After two years of JUCO ball followed by two years at Northern Colorado, he transferred to Tennessee and exploded into the most dangerous scorer in the country. The 6’6 wing dropped 30 point games at will in the SEC showing off deep shooting range, the willingness to attack the rim, and an undeniable confidence that he belonged among the best players in the country. We ranked Knecht as the No. 2 overall player in March Madness only behind Zach Edey. The final chapter of his inspiring college career will be written in this tournament, as he sets his eyes on taking Tennessee to its Final Four ever while solidifying his status as a lottery pick.

Knecht seems to have an easy role in the league as an off-ball scorer and volume three-point shooter. He’s been 40 percent on a high volume of attempts from behind the three-point line all season, and he’s consistently shown in ability to put the ball on the floor when he needs to attack a close out. It’s easy to envision him playing off NBA stars in a similar role to Grayson Allen in Phoenix or Tim Hardaway Jr. in Dallas.

The question is what else Knecht brings to the table other than buckets.
He’s likely to be a major defensive liability early in his career. He often looks lost navigating screens and can get overpowered on drives to the rim. He feels like the type of player who will wear a target on his chest defensively until he shows he can compete. He’s going to have to be a really really good supplemental scorer to overcome it if his defense doesn’t improve.

Knecht is also 23 years old, making him by far the oldest projected first round pick in this draft. Regardless of how you view his NBA translation, there’s no doubt he’s the type of player built to become a March Madness icon. With a starring run through the bracket, his strengths will appear a lot more desirable, and his weaknesses will feel easier to overlook in a weak draft class. Vols head coach Rick Barnes hasn’t made the Final Four since he coached T.J. Ford at Texas. If he can’t do it with Knecht, it feels like it’s never going to happen for him again.

Prospects advancing to the Sweet 16

Dalton Knecht | SG/SF | Tennessee | Age: 22.9 | Top 100: No. 8

Image

Knecht had his worst shooting game of the season -- going 1-of-8 from 3 and 5-of-18 overall -- but made enough plays late to stay alive in Tennessee's narrow win over Texas to advance to the Sweet 16.

The Longhorns hounded him on and off the ball all game long, throwing multiple bodies in an attempt to slow him down, but he also missed some open looks that he normally makes.

Knecht had some shaky moments as a ball handler and decision-maker, running into walls and having a tough time finishing around the basket. His defense, not known as his strong suit, wasn't great as he gambled for steals, got caught ball-watching on backdoor cuts, and looked upright while giving up straight line drives. To his credit, he kept competing and found ways to be productive, crashing the offensive glass for a putback dunk, cutting off the baseline for another emphatic finish, and hitting four pressure-packed free throws to ice the game.

A stern test with Creighton awaits on Friday in what should be a highly entertaining contest with plenty of NBA prospects -- which will be monitored closely by scouts. -- Givony

He'll be even better in a pro style offense.

Dalton Knecht | SF | Tennessee | Age: 22.9 | Top 100: No. 8

Credit to Knecht for going down swinging in a hard-fought loss to Purdue, concluding a career-altering season that saw him rise from the fringes of the NBA radar into projected lottery territory. Knecht put together one of his best offensive showings of the season, scoring 37 points and tying his season-high with six made 3s in a game where the Tennessee offense otherwise ran dry, and none of his teammates managed double figures.

Knecht had his full array of skills on display, saving his best game of the tournament for last and leaving NBA teams with plenty to chew on. Not only has he proved to be an elite catch-and-shoot player from range, with a quick release, strong footwork and solid positional size, but he's capable of putting the ball on the floor, getting good looks in the midrange, and has been able to showcase his athleticism in transition. He also made some positive passing reads against Purdue while feeling pressure and distributing to teammates, something that isn't necessarily considered a strength of his game. Purdue keyed in on him but didn't successfully take him away until the very end of the game, and Knecht did what he's done all season.

Even accounting for Knecht's advanced age, he's separated himself at this point as the most complete scoring wing in the draft, with a level of polish that will help him acclimate to the NBA right away as an offensive option. He doesn't get to the line a ton for a high-usage scorer, but he likely won't live at the rim in the NBA, and some of that is reflected in his jumper-centric shot diet. His defensive play is likely never going to be his strong suit, but he has enough size and athletic ability that there's some margin for improvement as a scheme defender. Knecht's unique background as a late-blooming former juco recruit helps feed the notion that he might be able to at least get up to speed in the NBA.

Knecht has positioned himself quite well at this point. He's a known quantity in a draft set to feature scant few of those and won't see the same level of defensive attention in the pros, which could open the game up for him a bit more as a scorer in one-on-one situations. For teams in need of immediate wing help, he has to be top of mind entering the spring, giving him a chance to hear his name called in the lottery depending on how the next couple of months go. His rise into a legitimate NBA prospect has been one of this season's better stories. -- Woo

Dalton's a better fit next to Dejounte than Trae because of defensive concerns. But, geesh...just get the kid in here and figure out the fit later:
