2024 Prospect Spotlight: Terrence Shannon, Jr.

Post#1 » by Jamaaliver » Thu Feb 22, 2024 3:44 pm

This young man is most likely to have a Jaime Jaquez type emergence as a rookie.

Big, strong, polished. Not an elite talent, but no real holes in his game.

Shooting *35 percent on 6.7 three-point attempts, Terrence Shannon Jr. is complementing his open-floor speed and half-court slashing with shotmaking that's helping to diminish concerns about his scoring versatility for the NBA.

We've seen hot streaks from him before, so he'll want to keep it up through conference play to avoid scouts questioning his shooting legitimacy. But the increased three-point volume is a promising sign, and there isn't much to question about Shannon's ability to explode in transition, blow by, finish and defend wings.

The biggest issue.....

He was initially suspended from the team after his arrest.
He actually sued to be able to come back and play :x while his court case is pending.

Pre-Season Scouting
Video is recent, tho.

He fills a lot of needs as an oversized, defensive minded scoring guard who can pressure the rim in the halfcourt.

Terrence Shannon Jr.

Wing | Illinois
Height: 6'6” | Weight: 215 lbs
2024 Draft Age: 23.9

Although he’s one of the oldest players of this class in consideration of a potential first round selection in 2024, Shannon Jr. has the tools to be a productive NBA player immediately. He’s a prospect that could have entered the draft in either of the past three years, but has continued his college stint.

After three seasons at Texas Tech, the fluid wing spent his fourth at Illinois and played at a whole new level. In an increased role, Shannon emerged as a legitimate high level scorer. Furthermore, he flashed upside as a passer and has made those around him better. He’s a walking highlight reel with the ability to throw down impressive dunks.

A smooth lefty, Shannon has a pure jumper that’s reliable from anywhere on the floor. While his 3-point shooting numbers could improve, there’s real reason for optimism for him as a perimeter shooter at the next level.

Not only can he play as a wing, but Shannon also has the skillset to play as a jumbo off-ball guard or even slide up as an undersized frontcourt piece. He’s got the physical frame to defend upwards of four positions and really projects to be a good NBA defender.

With Shannon, it’s all about refining his game. He does quite a few things well, but isn’t necessarily elite at any one thing. If he’s able to find that niche that makes him a special player, he would only increase his draft stock. Whether that’s finishing at the rim, 3-point shooting efficiency, or point of attack defense, he’ll need to find that one skill that gives him the edge over this upcoming draft class.

Some of the intangibles make Shannon attractive as it relates to impacting the game outside of the box score. He plays with a high motor and has a nose for the ball on the glass. He’s someone that always makes hustle plays and is willing to throw his body on the floor. The senior guard is also a good cutter and finds ways to put himself in the best position to score the ball and doesn't have to rely on being a self-creator.

Shannon has tested out the NBA Draft Combine in the past multiple times, so he knows what this is all about. While he could have already made the jump to the league, he’s proven that sticking around the college game has paid off as he’s finally broken out. His draft stock is still high despite his age.

Everyone knows how I feel about the big 3 in this draft. Edey, Shannon Jr., and Knecht.

Terrence Shannon, Jr. | Illinois | Senior

6'5" | 220 lb | Center | 23 years old | Senior

Skilled scorer with a relentless downhill mentality.

Shades of: Tyreke Evans

PLUSES
  • Thrives pushing the pace in transition. He uses bursts of speed to get by defenses for lefty layups at the basket.
  • He’s a good at-rim scorer with slick footwork, and he finishes with craft at the basket.
  • In the half court, he's an aware cutter and loves to catch and go with straight-line drives to the rim. He needs little space to rise over defenders for dunks.
  • An improved handle helps him get into pick-and-rolls and pull-up 3s. Though he’s not a lead creator, he can reliably make kick-out passes or find a cutter.
  • He's made 79 percent of his free throws in college and has good touch near the rim, though he needs to prove he can hit from the field.
  • Defends with an explosive athleticism that allows him to make highlight plays like chase-down blocks or fly-in rebounds from the perimeter. He displays solid defensive fundamentals, which could allow him to earn NBA minutes right away.

MINUSES
  • He hasn’t defended as well as an upperclassman. His effort isn’t the same as it was in his underclassman years at Texas Tech. Though he carries a heavier offensive workload now, he should still maintain his tone-setting approach from years prior.
  • He’s a bit undersized to have the type of versatility of the league’s greatest defenders, so there’s a cap on his potential.
  • Streaky shooter over his five years in college. He shoots well from the line but hasn’t been able to translate it to the perimeter other than in his junior season.
  • He doesn’t have a reliable floater. He shot at below a 20 percent clip during his four collegiate seasons, per Synergy Sports.

Terrence Shannon Jr. Scouting Report

Age: 23
Position: SF/SG
Size: 6'6", 225 lbs
Draft ceiling: Lottery
Draft floor: Undrafted

Terrence Shannon Jr. has drawn NBA attention since his time at Texas Tech. He kept coming back and ultimately maximized his stock during this final season at Illinois.

Though he's now one of the oldest prospects in the 2024 draft class, Shannon entered the NCAA tournament averaging a career-high 23.0 points per game. He led Illinois to the Big Ten Tournament championship, putting up 102 points through three games.

A two-way wing with Shannon's athleticism and shot-making ability should have plenty of suitors. Scouts also admire his gradual improvement, and Shannon's handle, jump shot and finishing continue to get better.

He's played himself into the lottery discussion with scoring production and 2.4 threes per game to go with his explosiveness and defensive tools.

But it's impossible to confidently project Shannon's draft range until more information comes out about his rape charge.

Shannon was suspended earlier this season after being charged in connection to an alleged rape this past September. An upcoming hearing in May could help determine where (or if) he'll get drafted.

NBA Role and Pro Comparisons
Spoiler:
Projected role: Slashing/scoring wing

Pro comparions:
Kelly Oubre Jr.

Shannon will feast mostly on transition, spot-up shooting, and ball-screen opportunities in the NBA. His creation skills aren't sharp enough for a potential top option, but his speed and shot-making should still translate to scoring in a secondary or bench-spark role that's similar to Kelly Oubre Jr.'s

Shannon won't offer much playmaking, so like Oubre, he'll be valued strictly for his ability to provide an extra scoring punch.
Physical Tools and Athleticism
Spoiler:
Shannon's 6'6" size, 225-pound frame and explosiveness mirror that of Boston Celtics wing Jaylen Brown. However, Shannon's 6'8" wingspan is slightly underwhelming.

He has the right speed and force with the ball to become one of the NBA's more potent transition scorers/finishers. While he has plenty of bounce, he's one of the most effective below-the-rim finishers in the draft (65.0 percent) thanks to his strength and coordination.

Positional size, strength and quickness also gives Shannon defensive versatility, although his lack of length could make it challenging for him to defend bigger wing scorers in the NBA.
Signature Strengths
Spoiler:
Attacking

Shannon looks like lightning in the open floor with how fast he can take a rebound or an outlet pass and blow by backpedaling defenses. He's a weapon with and without the ball on fast breaks.

In the half court, he has a quick first step off the catch and his dribble move. He slices through gaps and beats rim protectors to the rim.

Improving shotmaking

After catching fire in the Big Ten tournament, Shannon had a career-best 68 threes through his first 28 games this season. Despite an unconventional pushing release, he's improved his range and shotmaking.

While he still goes through some inconsistent stretches, he's become a more versatile shooter, particularly with his pull-up game (40.9 percent) in the half court.

Finishing

Shannon has excellent finishing tools thanks to his strength, athleticism and coordination. Aside from creating easy angles for himself at the basket, he drew 8.8 free-throw attempts per game, which speaks to how tough he was to stop at the rim without having to foul.
Weaknesses
Spoiler:
Creation/playmaking

Despite dramatically raising his scoring average, Shannon still lacks the typical creation bag of top NBA options. He leans more on burst and rise-and-fire shotmaking than advanced dribble moves.

Shannon has also averaged fewer than three assists per game in all five of his collegiate seasons. That suggests won't be offering significant playmaking value in the NBA.

Versatility

Since Shannon is a limited passer and rebounder, he won't have as much margin for error as a shooter. Even with a respectable 36.2 three-point percentage this season, he was streaky from outside.

Questions remain about how Shannon will impact games whenever his jump shot isn't falling.

Great prospect. I really like TSJ. He reminds me of Shawn Marion, but one thing that bothers me is that he doesn't pass the ball. He is a great scorer and converts a lot, but it looks like he gets tunnel vision doesn't look to play team ball at times.

Hawks don't need another SF, but I really like TSJ's game.

TSJ reminds me of Herro or Maxey and could be a guy who get draft at #15, and then five years later, people will be saying he should have been drafted top 3 in his draft class.
