Re: Welcome to Boston, Hugo Gonzalez!
If Joe handles Ooooogo' the same way he handled Walsh last season, me personally I'd be pissed.
My memory say's Walsh got in a bunch of games early in the season and not just in garbage time. And then POOF, he became an extra seat on the sideline.
From what I remember, I didn't see any terrible decisions or lots of fouls. Did he shoot well? Not really, but that's not a defining measure IMO.
Call me crazy, but if I was Walsh's agent I would have been on the phone during the summer getting a feel from teams because if Walsh is kept on the roster and the same crap happens again I'd be pissed. Unless the kid was a knucklehead off the court, which doesn't seem to be the case, why was he pretty much shut down for long stretches during last season. There's no way a 20 year old kid is gonna get in any comfort zone in that situation.
I give PP a lot of credit for making his grievances known before his big contract. You gotta walk that walk after you talk that talk, but in order for that to happen you gotta be given the opportunity to walk first.
Throw them in the fire and let them make mistakes and the coaching staff needs to develop. I'm not a Jordan Poole fan, Steve Kerr fan or Warriors fan, but Jordan Poole was the 28th pick and played a ton his rookie year. Now, it was Covid, Klay was out and Steph was pretty much out, but Kerr threw Poole in the fire.
With no JT, Jrue, Porzingis, Kornet and AL there will be opportunities to develop guys this season.
Let the young guys rock Joe.

I wouldn't worry about that happening since it's clear that this season is *very* different than last season.
We just got rid of half the team and our best player tore his achilles. Our 2 FA signings are guys who were end of the bench players for the Wolves.
Clearly, there will be more opportunity this season for the young guys.
And I believe it was a Keith Smith column the other day where a Celtics coach was quoted saying Hugo will get *real minutes* with the big club this season.
phincsfan wrote:My memory say's Walsh got in a bunch of games early in the season and not just in garbage time. And then POOF, he became an extra seat on the sideline.
Yeah, he got in some games because Joe had to play *somebody* with KP injured - especially in games where Al sat out if it was a back to back. Plus, Hauser missed a bunch of games early in the season as well with the back injury.
That's why Walsh played.
We got healthy and he moved back to the bench. Because last season we were THE championship favorites. When that's the case, a 20 yr old 2nd yr player is probably not gonna play much on a team with so much depth and talent that is in a title or bust season.
And he wasn't even that good when he did get those early season minutes.
I also think the mistake fans often make with regards to the playing time certain guys get is thinking that all playing time decisions are based only on what happens during the games that we see on TV. When in reality, there's a lot of that happens behind closed doors that we don't see.
As the saying goes, "You get the playing time in games that you earn in practice."
We're not there at practice, at training camp. We don't see who's better than who at those practices, how good players look, how hard they work. Which ones stay late after practice to get more shots up, which one is the first player to get there everyday, etc.
Other things that happen behind closed doors that we don't see: who is paying attention the closest in film sessions? Who wasn't in the rotation for a game because they were late to practice or missed the team bus? Who was mouthing off to one of the coaches or trainers the day before a game? Who was out late partying while the rest of the team was at the hotel keeping it low key the night before a game?
I'm not saying Walsh did any of these things. I'm just saying there's a lot that happens behind closed doors that we don't see as fans.
Nothing wrong with having a different opinion - as long as it's done respectfully. It'd be lame if we all agreed on everything

Definitely sounds like a guy who's gonna be in the rotation, pretty much every night
Wow..we're really gonna have a 19 year old rookie in our rotation. Hasn't happened since here since Tatum, no?
I'm excited to see what he can become eventually if we develop him and play him regularly.
Long term, I'm seeing him fit really well with the Jays..you could play all 3 of them together. The Jays doing the ball handling, scoring and shooting. Hugo complementing them by flying around, wreaking havoc, getting steals, deflections, rebounds, blocks, hustling, cutting, dunking.

100% agree. Walsh has a lot of potential and needs more PT. Especially this year. Hugo arguably has more tools so yeah he needs the same opportunities. I am ok with Hugo getting some of that in G league his first year.
But at the same time it looks like he can contribute now.

So Kawhi, aka the Claw, measured 9.75, with Gonzalez's hands being 10.25.

their teams sign them to illegal contracts that years later get them investigated by the league

I really like Hugo as backup PG. Pairing him and PP together allows PP to be a shooting guard/scorer on offense. I hope that duo has great chemistry and success together.
"I think the criticism's stupid," Stevens said. "So I don't care. I'm with Jaylen (Brown) on that. Those two had achieved more than most 25 and 26 year olds ever had. I'd rather be in the mix and have my guts ripped out than suck."

Sounds like you're starting AS over PP.

Joe doing his irrational bit over this. Claiming the report is untrue, but also that the media should speak to him in Spanish if they can and that he and Brown are learning it to communicate with him better because you should "meet people where they are".

I mean, Spanish is his first language and the language he's most comfortable communicating in. But he's not struggling with the language barrier when speaking English.
Both things can be true.

Working on it doesn't mean he's struggling with it. When Michael Jordan was in his prime, he would always continue to "work on" his game. That doesn't mean he was struggling as a player.
Hugo also shrugs at the beginning of answering both questions..shrugging it off, as if it's really not that big of a deal. And his facial expression as he's talking is nonchalant, indicating it's not a big deal.
And he seems to be saying that the terminology is different for the Celtics..like the Celtics have different words/terminology for different things than other teams do..which doesn't seem to be an English/spanish thing, but moreso a Celtics thing where we call different things (like types of defenses, schemes, sets, actions, etc.) different names than the Bulls, Blazers, Rockets or overseas teams like Real Madrid call them. So like any new player (whether they're coming from Real Madrid or the timberwolves) has a certain adjustment period to learn the terminology.
I've seen interviews with other guys (like Baylor, Walsh, Amari, Shulga, etc.) who have talked about how the terminology is different here and they had to learn it..

This is exactly how he meant it, that’s what angered Joe. That and the fact of what’s going on in this country! It is likely not allowed to be talked about on here.
Haven’t heard him have any difficulty understanding English in any of the interviews he’s done since the draft. That should tell you all you need to know. There is context around what Hugo was saying, if you don’t ignore it.
Jaylen started learning Spanish many years ago now. Well before he knew Hugo. Joe said he only knows how to cuss Hugo out in Spanish, so he’s just cussing him out randomly or can you understand it’s because he’s doing something wrong on the court? I don’t think Joe had to specifically say I’m cussing him out about basketball for you to understand that.
Even if he’s struggling with English on his regular degular days, so what? Why make it the headline, to other him, IN THIS CLIMATE? Cold state of affairs.

??? He's very clearly talking about basketball terminology, not the English language. I know it's hard to believe, but most Europeans speak at least two or more languages fluently. They start teaching English to children in most places like Germany, Spain, France and Italy. It's not a random elective when you get to high school in your teens.
They also mostly speak English within European pro clubs, particularly a club like Real Madrid where they generally have talent from various different nationalities.
