Brooklyn Nets 2016-17 season Pick Watch Thread

Post#1 » by rickrolled » Wed May 25, 2016 5:24 pm

With next years draft being hyped up big time, and the Nets looking like a lottery team it's a good idea to keep track of their offseason moves this summer.

Jarret Jack
The Nets have three point guards on their roster, with starter Jarrett Jack likely to be bought out at $500,000 after tearing his ACL, and backup Shane Larkin having until June 29 to decide whether he will exercise his $1.5 million player option. 2 weeks ago – via New York Post

Thomas Robinson
Brooklyn Nets forward Thomas Robinson is expected opt out of the final season of a two-year deal the Express-News has learned. Robinson averaged 4.3 points and 5.1 rebounds in 71 games with the Nets last season. 1 week ago – via San Antonio Express-News

Shane Larkin
Larkin, the No. 18 selection in the 2013 NBA draft, will be a restricted free agent on July 1, if he declines the option. Larkin doesn’t have a high market value around the NBA and for that reason he will probably opt in to guarantee the $1.5 million for next season. Larkin played in 78 games this season, starting 17, and he averaged 7.3 points, 4.4 assists, 2.3 rebounds and 1.2 steals. Besides Larkin, teammates Wayne Ellington and Thomas Robinson also own player options for next season. 1 month ago – via ESPN.com

Sergey Karasev
Vasily Karasev, head-coach of Zenit Saint Petersburg and father of Sergey Karasev, said that his son will no longer play for the Nets next season. Brooklyn decided to not pick up the option on Karasev’s contract for 2016-2017 season, so Russian player will be an unrestricted free-agent this summer. In an interview with Izvestia.ru coach Karasev said: ‘Sergey is fine, he’s already working for the next season. It’s too early to say where he’ll play next season. We will consider all the options, both from NBA and Europe. One thing is for sure, Sergey won’t play for the Nets next season’ 20 hours ago – via Sportando

Their top 5 needs:

1. PG who can shoot and run pick and roll at a high level with Lopez.

2. 3 + D wings at both wing positions.

3. A quality defensive back-up to Lopez.

4. A 6th man scoring guard.

5. A decent stretch 4.

I think they are looking international for a lot of these needs given the intense competition for the top domestic guys.

The first big key to the offseason, IMO, is Bogdanovic. I'm hoping his post-ASB 3-point splurge sold Marks on him and he keeps him as a rotation staple. One of the worst defensive players I've ever seen.

A team with Bogey starting on the wing is going to be hard-pressed to field anything close to an average defensive team. And he's not even that good offensively - weak passer, too slow to run pick and roll. Just a shooter and mediocre rumbling iso guy.

But if they are smart enough to jettison Bogey and go for more of an Doug Collins era Philly style with hard-nosed defensive guards and junkball offense, I think they could get themselves out of the bottom 10 pretty easily.

A free agent foursome like Jeremy Lin, Langston Galloway, Evan Turner and Ian Mahinmi sounds pretty dull on paper, but it's just the kind of group that can ground and pound its way to mediocrity when added to the RHJ/Thad/Bropez core.

What are we expecting from them next season? 23-59, 2nd worst record?

Too early to tell with the new front office, their cap space and the sheer amount of roster turnover ahead of them.

Jack/Larkin/Ellington/T-Rob/Bargs - their finest tank commanders along with Bogey - all these guys are likely gone.

Our hope, other than incompetence for new GM Marks, is that they will choose to go with mediocre reclamation projects, overmatched Euro transplants and young undrafted guys, and take on mostly washed-up veterans for future picks.

Basically the strategy Ainge took in 2013. Jordan Crawford, Vitor Faverani, Phil Pressey, Crash, Hump, etc.

I would also love it if they traded RHJ and cap space to Chicago for D-Rose. But alas, no mo Billy King.

One danger is that they go the Portland route with young, hungry players. But even if they do, they don't have a Lillard and McCollum to win with.

Another risk is that they make a hard run at mediocrity through free agency. Conley, Rondo, Fournier, Eric Gordon all guys they could get just by offering the most money.. Or Lin, Turner, Mahinmi, etc.

So at worst, they could win 35-38 games and we have the 10th pick instead of the 3rd.

If it were me, I'd be trying to add talent to the roster for future trades. Robin Lopez, Afflalo types. They don't have any draft picks until 2019, but Young and Lopez will have trade value. They can sign veterans in order to trade them for picks or younger players. The only play right now is to be adding value.

If they keep Lopez and Young dont expect Mahinmi out of that group of players, not enough minutes and he could start on some teams. Conley is not going there either, its Spurs or Grizzlies.

Nets fans seem to believe Lin is likely to sign, because he knows their new coach. I doubt Orlando doesnt match any offer sheet for Fornier, so its the bottom of the barrel signings for the Nets.

I don't see them getting out of the bottom 5-8 barring 2 big FA signings. I mean just look at the following list;

Teams that will be better than Brooklyn;
GSW
OKC
Spurs
Clippers
Portland
Houston
Utah
New Orleans
Minnesota
Cleveland
Miami
Atlanta
Boston
Indy
Charlotte
Detroit

That's automatically 16 teams that are/will be better 100% than Brooklyn, so currently that leaves them at the 14th pick, then you have teams that SHOULD be better;

Dallas - Carlisle & Dirk with a few FA's should be better
Memphis - Does Conley come back? If so there's enough on that roster to be better
Sacramento - New coach (at some stage) if they get their act together they will be
Denver - Homecourt alone and another year with Jokic/Nurkic/Mudiay clicking will be better
Washington - Healthy Beal and Wall with a good supporting cast, I think they just had a down year and a new coach should re-invigorate them
Bucks - I mean there is too much talent and another year with Giannis/Parker getting better will put them above Brooklyn
Magic - Young but again so much talent and Vogel coaching them? Yes sir.

That leaves them in the 1-7 range of teams;

Chicago - No one knows what's going to happen there... looks like a dumpster fire
New York - All they need is Melo to go down and Brooklyn is automatically better
Philly - Philly (what more needs to be said?
Phoenix - I think they are due for a long rebuild around Booker/pick 4 and will shift some vets off
LA - Won't be good enough to rise off the bottom regardless of Simmons/ingram

It looks like another juicy pick and with everyone having cap space it will be hard for them to attain that big big FA... they might have to overpay for lower tier guys and then if Brook goes down it's a top 3 pick yet again.

Brooklyn should be in the lottery, but anything beyond the bottom 10 it's too early to guarantee. Depending on what happens in free agency, and with injuries, the wheels could come off Miami, Charlotte, Dallas, Memphis, Houston, Washington.

And with bad coaching and/or internal conflict, teams we think should get better (Denver, Orlando, Minnesota, New Orleans, Milwaukee, Sacramento) could be bottom 5 bad. Keep in mind that 5th pick Minnesota (29-53) and 10th pick Milwaukee (33-49) were only separated by 4 games. At 21-61, the Nets only have to buy one late first and get lucky, then sign one or two difference makers (maxing Conley? Paying Lance Stephenson or Jeff Green?) and they're going from bottom 3 to bottom 10.

There don't seem to be many teams, at least, willing to overpay for Brook Lopez (would Cleveland trade Kevin Love?) or Thaddeus Young.

Seems like the size/athleticism combo for the top guys here is much better than 2016. 6'11" athletic forwards, 6'8" SFs, 6' 5" PGs, etc, etc.

Hope we get a shot in the lotto next year.

I almost feel bad for Nets fans. We should cut them a break and not post so much about them during the summer.

Also, probably a little karma coming our way this season. The Nets fans have a vested interest in hoping we lose as many games as possible this season as well.

Asked around realgm forums, ( Chicago, Memphis, Miami, Charlotte )

What players might return for them next season and here are a few replies, small sample size, hope those teams stay better than BKN, because if they do next years pick is going to be good.

Miami (asked about whiteside,bosh, etc)
Unless one of Deng / Joe Johnson / Whiteside is willing to play for less than FMV, Heat can probably only retain one of them, maybe 2, but probably not Deng. Unless something crazy happens and the Heat move on from Dragic, you're likely looking at a starting 5 of Goran, Wade, Winslow, Bosh, Whiteside and a bench of Richardson, Tyler Johnson, probably Joe Johnson, probably Briante Weber, one more developmental guy (Stokes?) and a few veterans who take the minimum to live in South Florida.

Charlotte (which players out of Batum, Lin, Big Al, Lee, Marvin returns)
Ranked order of likelihood, imo:
Batum
Lin
Williams
Lee
Jefferson

I'd put Marvin at #2

I want Nic, Marv, and Lin to return next season, but the FO will just re-sign Al, Courtney, and Nic.*knock on the wood.

Chicago
Pau is gone. Noah is probably gone depending on who you listen to. Butler seems to be staying - for now. No one else has any clue what the Bulls are going to do. Based on our FO history, we will probably try to patch up the team with some 2nd tier FAs and go into the season with a 5-8 seed playoff team with no shot at winning the title.
