brought in 2 NEW STARTERS
new coaching staff around him

elite level defense

Him not getting it would be a travesty.

voting narratives are dumb

yeah he is pretty good I guess, Joe is better though.

Like a main contributor to chosing the coach of the year should really be what coach has won the most! Add to that historic levels of production from the team....it makes zero sense to me how you can justify OKC coach at this point.

adding 8 ws from Chet certainly helps them too.

I think a coach who added in 2 new starters, and still improved an already good record of 57/25 to an estimated 65-17 for an 8 win improvement.

Usually goes to the coach of the team that overachieved or nobody expected to be a certain level of good/great. With how our top 6 is stacked, most predicted we would win a ton of regular season games. But no one anticipated this historic level of dominance tbh. Depending on how the rest of the season goes, both Joe and Brad should win in their respective categories imo.

OKC adding Chet to an already decent Thunder team is an undersold aspect to them winning. He might not beat Wemby for RoY but he's certainly 2nd in most ballots. SGA is also 2nd behind Jokic for MVP. No need to add CotY to that.

agree with all of it -- just not expecting Joe to finish higher than 2nd. He was 3rd last year? Not bad, so far. This year -- if they run through the tape -- I think he easily deserves it. But as Zoya said, the narrative around COY is always "wHoSe TeAm WaS MOsT SuRPriSinG?" with absolutely zero analysis beyond that. You don't get credit for being an excellent coach of an excellent team. That's boring, I guess. You need to be coaching a team that outperforms expectations to some degree -- because for whatever reason, that's apparently not the players or the GM, that is ALWAYS coaching.

MVP conversations are also dumb. "Who deserves it this year?" "Who does the most with the least?" are the two most common refrains there. I'd just give it to the best player in the league who had the best season, and then MJ, Shaq, and LeBron would have more, and I'd be fine with it, but people really wanted to give it to Karl Malone and Steve Nash and Derrick Rose and it's just whatever, I guess?

I'm not aware of any narrative around Exec of the Year or Defensive Player of the Year so I think those are, by comparison, kind of refreshing. All NBA tends to be straightforward, too. But the narratives around MVP and especially COY I find annoying and indicative of flawed results.

I've embraced Joe this season. X's and O's, coaching philosophy aside, I've embraced him because he's a mad man. I LOVE the trying to block the other team's shot bs. I LOVE how a game or two ago when PP hit a big 3 that was the start of a run for us to end the other team's chances of coming back he was yelling and hitting him on the back as the shot went in with PP near our bench like Joe himself was a player on our bench. He's calm and almost indifferent in the interviews sometimes, but I don't feel like he's that at all when coaching and with the guys. If they can win it all this year, he's a guy who coach us through the entire run and we wouldn't have a situation where your roster can still compete, but it needs a new voice to get it out of them like past contending teams (Celtics ones included) needed.

I'm not saying he's without criticism, as nobody is, but I also believe he's a guy who is open to ideas and if something doesn't work will either continue to improve and find out either how to make it work or what should be done instead. Just like with the Jays though, this post-season will define a lot of things for Joe as well. Either way he'll still be a mad man lol.

Yes, at the very least.

Cs have one of the best offenses in history this season.

No way Joe is not getting credit for that.

yeah he is pretty good I guess, Joe is better though.

The one argument for Mark D. that I find kind of persuasive is that he's coaching a YOUNG team, in particular one reliant on two young stars. So coaching can be presumed to have been impactful.

Yeah I think that's why Mark Daigneault will win COY. The Thunder have been so good it's shocking when you realize they are the 2nd youngest team in the league.

Anyhow, I think it's cool that both CotMs are guys Brad recently hired to coach. I think they've both started out their careers winning the award at a higher rate than Brad ever did.

On the other hand, you know who else wins the award often? Doc Rivers.

When we were overachieving with young guys Brad wasn't even getting COTY votes let alone awards lol.

Matt Nagy also won COTY :D

Does anyone believe that Joe keeps his job if we don't make it out of the EAsT ??

...or if we get to the Finals and look outmatched ?

Everything is set up perfectly for us this season; Roster design, roster health, not great health for everyone else...
