It seems pretty clear Ainge is waiting for the right fit and has an idea who other than Payton might be availalble. I wouldn't object to Payton because he could bring the ball up in pressure, sink free throws and when the ball got to him wouldn't be afraid to shoot if it was the right thing to do. Even if he is far removed from what he was, he could still help.

Bringing him in at the end of the year is pointless. If you do it, then you do it soon. Even if he doesn't play he's still at least with the team developing chemistry in whatever practices we squeeze in, and also gets to know the system. The point of bringing him in would be for his stability. If we bring him in right before the playoffs he doesn't knwo the system, he has no time on the court with the guys, and we might as well just go with what we already have. I'm not sure if I want him or not, but IF we do it then it's not or never.

we have 2 roster spots. Is it so bad having powe on the bench in street cloths so we have a 3rd pg in case house is off and playing poor defense?

I wouldn't bring him in as the backup, but maybe as the 3rd string, sure

We're saving one roster spot for a big man, which will be either Webber or The Birdman, and one spot for a guard. If nobody becomes available soon, we will go with Payton. But Ainge has his connections and knows exactly who will become available.

The chances of players like Payton or Chris Webber joining the Celtics are slim to none.

No longer primed for disappointment, Pierce said he rejoined Ainge in the planning stages of the club following the Allen and Garnett deals.

"When you bring a group like me, KG and Ray together, those next group of guys you have to be real careful who else you bring in here," the captain said. "You don't want more egos on the team. You want the perfect role guys who can complement the talent you have."

Ainge said he will continue to keep that in mind as the trade deadline looms. With two roster spots open, there is room to add and now no shortage of unemployed veterans who would relish the chance to don the green and white. But just as he was patient with the rebuilding process through the very tough times, he plans to be patient with any further moves as to not sabotage the good times.

You're not talking about two players with big egos in their cocky prime, you're talking about two players with formerly big egos who are in the late twilight of their careers and who are desperate to win a title even as role players.

Yea, I don't think it eliminates GP or Webber. It does eliminate the Ricky Davis' and JR Smith's of the league though. I think the older 2 are guys you can explain the situation to, and, more importantly, will understand what's going on here.

There's really no need to allow an agent of a player you have no intention of signing to meet with you. There must be some under lying issues they both may be trying to iron out. More along the lines of trust/role/understanding/chemistry.

Perkins can defend Billups as well as Payton can.

Payton is completely and without any doubt finished as a basketball player.
