Leave steroid speculation out of this, who was the better player?

I would probably go with Sammy. The reason I pick Sammy is because his peak is a good amount higher than Winfield's in my opinion. Winfield did what he did over a longer amount of time, but I don't think he was as great as Sammy.

LMAO.

I found each player's top eight seasons in terms of BRAA, added them together and then added that number to their career total BRAA. Then I did the same with FRAA and combined both numbers together so Sosa would get some help because of his strong peak.

Sosa: 808 RAR
Winfield: 807 RAR

So I guess Sosa should be a HOF?

Sosa's top 8 WARP3 Seasons
14.1
9.9
9.2
8.9
8.8
6.7
6.5
6.4

Total- 106.0

Winfield's top 8 WARP3 Seasons
11.5
9.6
8.4
8.2
7.7
7.6
7.6
7.0

Total- 131.3

Also, keep in mind that Winfield has played in over 650 more games than Sosa. And Sammy's 5 best season's were all in a row, which is more impressive to me. If you'd want a player over the long haul, take Winfield, but I'll take the guy with the higher peak, although it is pretty damn close and it could go either way.

To get all 34Celtic for a minute, Winfield was considered the superior defensive player (along with having one of the all-time greatest OF arms. You could also make a reasonable case that Winfield was a better overall offensive player although he never had a peak like Sosa
