I want him

Mark Bowman of MLB.com writes that the Braves have "continued to show strong interest" in free agent starter Charlie Morton.

Atlanta inked lefty Drew Smyly to a one-year, $11 million deal last week, but the club is apparently not done searching for starting pitching help. Morton, 37, posted a disappointing 4.74 ERA and 1.395 WHIP in 38 regular-season innings (nine starts) this past summer with the Rays, though he did perform well in the playoffs as Tampa Bay marched all the way to the World Series. MLB.com's Mark Feinsand reported earlier this month that the veteran right-hander was drawing "some level of interest" from "at least" 8-10 teams.

This makes me happy.
I'm glad the talks seemed to go smoothly and quick

Yeah, if last season hadn't been cut short, we would have some serious problems with the lack of starting pitching - especially with Soroka's injury and how bad Folty was. Now, we're looking good and still have a couple guys like Wright and Wilson and possibly Muller waiting in the wings. And with Morton and Smyly just signed for 1 year, there's not much risk in those contracts, and we should have replacements ready for 2022.

Ok, so now they gotta tell us if the NL will have the DH next year.

The Atlanta Braves and the price for Kris Bryant

https://tomahawktake.com/2020/11/30/atlanta-braves-price-kris-bryant-high-trade/amp/

Five Teams That Should Trade for Kris Bryant

The former MVP may be on the move this winter, and we've got some landing spots in mind.

Atlanta Braves

We know Alex Anthopoulos doesn't mind handing out one-year contracts to premium free agents looking for a bounce-back season. Bryant essentially falls in that category and could be Marcell Ozuna’s de facto replacement as a right-handed power bat. The Braves have been waiting to commit to Ozuna while they see whether the DH will stay in the NL, but Bryant is a more attractive option given his versatility in the field. He could take the majority of at bats at third and mentor Austin Riley, who would serve as a valuable bench piece if the Braves don’t have a DH spot to fill.

Supposedly, the Nats aren't willing to trade Rutledge (their top pitching prospect) to get Bryant, so I'm doubtful the Cubs can get a real big package for him - especially after Bryant was awful in the short season. I don't see the point in giving up assets in order to over-pay Bryant. Let the Nats do that.

I prefer not to give up much for Bryant. He didn't perform well and I believe hesnonly signed for one season.

Riley should be the starter

I would not do, the proposed Braves trade for Bryant.

According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, MLB instructed clubs in a memo last week "to proceed under the assumption" that the designated hitter will not be used in the National League next year.

This nugget was revealed as part of Rosenthal's notes column on Monday. It came within the greater context of a question of roster size and how it might be impacted by the Rule 5 Draft. MLB implemented the DH in the NL this year due to COVID-19, an effort aimed at reducing the workload on starting pitchers. The uncertainty over the situation has cast a large shadow over the early part of the offseason, as a number of free agents could see their markets slashed in half. Nelson Cruz stands out the most, but Marcell Ozuna could also factor in here. Similarly, a team like the Mets could alter their offseason plans with both Pete Alonso and Dominic Smith in-house. There's always the chance something is negotiated which keeps the DH in the NL -- the players certainly wouldn't mind that -- but the owners would have to get something in return, with expanded playoffs one obvious possibility.
