DeRosa to DL, Fontenot called up

NEW YORK -- The Cubs are expected to call-up infielder Mike Fontenot from Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday to take the place of Mark DeRosa, who suffered a finger injury while playing first base during Monday night's game at Shea Stadium.

Fontenot, who was hitting .364 at Iowa with six home runs and 27 RBIs in 35 games, will play second base when Ryan Theriot plays at short. The left-handed hitting Fontenot, acquired in the Sammy Sosa trade in February of '05, has a .401 on-base percentage at Iowa.

DeRosa injured the ring finger of his right hand while colliding with Endy Chavez on a play in the seventh inning of Monday's 5-4 loss. Jason Marquis' throw pulled DeRosa over the bag, where Chavez ran into him, a scene reminiscent of the play in Los Angeles last year when Rafael Furcal collided with Derrek Lee, breaking his right wrist.

Season DL Count: 2 (Wade Miller, Mark DeRosa)

Fontenot was playing awesome @ AAA.

I'm interested in seeing how he's going to play.

It's really only one.

Miller being on the DL is a good thing.

Bleed Cubbie Blue says: A 40-man roster move will have to be made, likely sending Kerry Wood, Wade Miller or Juan Mateo to the 60-day DL (where players do not count against the 40-man roster limit.

Yeah and if Jones goes on the DL it cancels out our already injured players.

Yeah I think they decided not to send DeRosa to the DL. Because yesterday they said we could use DeRosa in an Emergency.
