If that doesn't happen, Riley indicated he plans to use two cap exceptions this offseason (a biannual one for $1.9 million and a midlevel for about $6 million, but they can't be combined). Riley said his ''plan'' remains to have big cap space in summer 2010.
Under contract for 2008-09: Shaquille O'Neal ($20 million), Dwyane Wade ($14.4 million), Mark Blount ($7.35 million), Udonis Haslem ($6.57 million), Smush Parker ($2.4 million/player option) and Daequan Cook ($1.2 million).
That's $52 million. Throw in the $2.4 million cap hold for restricted free agent Dorell Wright and a $687,456 team option for Alexander Johnson, and that's $55.1 million. That doesn't even count the cap space that must be allotted to Miami's draft pick upon selection ($4.02 million for the top pick, $3.59 million for the second, $3.23 million for No. 3, etc.).
The cap -- which rose $2.5 million to $55.6 million this season -- is expected to jump between $1 million and $3 million next season. The good news, Riley said, is, ``we can be [$11 million-$12 million] under the [luxury-tax threshold], which would allow us to sign back one of our guys maybe and to [use both exceptions].''
Riley said a maximum contract would start ``at $13 million or something. So if you get $8 [million] under, what the hell good does that make you? You can't even use your midlevel. The midlevel is probably going to be about $6 [million].''
[size=75]Excluding Antawn Jamison, most of the top potential unrestricted free agents have early-termination clauses. Of those, Ron Artest, Corey Maggette and Gilbert Arenas are expected to opt out. Shawn Marion, Allen Iverson and Baron Davis might, too.
But with Elton Brand out with a ruptured Achilles', the Clippers believe he won't opt out. (He's due $16.4 million next season.) Indiana's Jermaine O'Neal would be giving up $44 million over two years if he opts out.

If your asking me how, then check larry coons CBA FAQ, but if your asking me where I get that figure, well its from the article.
There are a lot of rumors like a trade for Mike Miller or for Watson & Wally. I don't know how the Heat can build from there if Mr. Arison will not exceed the lux tax limit.

I wanted to see how the NBA determines whether the MLE will be $5.3M or $5.5M, for example. As last summer it was thought to be X, but instead it was Y, with it being a few dollars off from what everyone suggested it would be.

I wonder how the goal to have max cap space for 2010 affects them signing a MLE player -- will they give someone the max years and max dollars? I guess they would for the right person, since they offered it to Mo this offseason, it just seems that the good players get re-signed for more than the MLE by their own teams and the MLE players are generally overpaid.

Great plan, this is the same bs plan that got us to the bottom of the league. Sign back one of our guys "maybe"??? Were **** till at least Shaq contract is done... this cheap owner is going to let Wade's prime years go to waste because of money. Riley is a great GM, but theres not much he can do in this situation. Like i said, were screwed....

I think he was talking about Dorrell and maybe Ricky (to be traded later). JWill only comes back here if he takes the vet minimum.
IMO we need some Riley-type of players like Posey who can come cheap and for a short term contract to still keep our options open on 2010

I think Riley means DWright and CQuinn when he is referring to "one of our own guys", I cant see a scenario where Ricky Davis or JWill comes back.
I think with a key MLE signing and a good draft we can turn this thing around quicker then alot of the pessimists are saying.

I have a little trade that i think helps carry-out Riley's plan. Now i don't know how much you hardcore heat fans (Im just a casual Heat fan lol) value Udonis Haslem. but I do know he is liked in Miami well here's my trade:
Orl trades: Keyon Dooling(exp), Pat Garrity(exp), JJ redick
Orl aquire: Udonis Haslem and Smush Parker 2009 2nd rnd pick
Mia trades: Udonis Haslem and Smush Parker 2009 2nd rnd pick
Mia aquire: Keyon Dooling(exp), Pat Garrity(exp), JJ redick
Why for Miami: I think this is a great step for Riley's plan to get under the cap. Keyon Dooling comes for half of the year and can be let go. But keyon as shown a couple of years ago in miami is a nice player to have so maybe he can prove in this last couple of months that he can be a starting pg for this team next year and is re-signed. Pat is another expiring, he was once known as a good shooting big man maybe he can surprise and earn a little contract for next year. Then theres JJ redick who i think will become even better that Jason Kapono did under Rileys system. Another plus is Smush Parker leaving who i know isnt very liked in Miami.

I don't see Riley wanting to help Orlando anymore.
I think two good free agents to go after would be James Jones and Chris Duhon. I think you can get both with the MLE and LLE respectively. Then re-sign Quinn/Wright and maybe one more vet addition.
PG- Duhon/Quinn/Draft Pick (Rose/Mayo/Bayless)
SG- Wade/Cook
SF- Jones/Wright/Draft Pick (Greene/Batum)
PF- Haslem/Johnson?/Draft Pick (Beasely/Greene)
C- O'Neal/Vet Free Agent/Anthony/Draft Pick (Hibbert/Jordan)
I think that's a good start, with hopefully one of the holes being filled through a Davis/Williams trade.

This getting under the cap this coming summer is a load of bollocks.
2008-2009 salaries (per the article):
Shaq $20 mil
Wade $14.4 mil
Blount $7.35mil
Haslem $6.57 mil
Parker $2.4 million
Cook $1.2 million
Wright cap-hold $2.4 million
Johnson $687,456
Our pick ~ $3.5 million
So, it is quite obvious the only way to get significantly under the cap is to:
1. Trade Shaq
2. Trade everyone else
Scenario 1: Even if we managed to trade everyone else and keep Shaq and Wade, Miami would have around $43 million committed to Wade, Shaq, and our pick. (I believe we also have to renounce JWill, Ricky Davis, and Alonzo Mourning to get to this figure.) This leaves Miami with about $12-15 million in cap space to fill out 10-12 roster spots. That obviously fixes nothing.
Scenario 2: Riley is probably too loyal to really deal Shaq -- I am not knocking him, mind you -- especially when it would be for expiring contracts. (There is no way Miami could acquire quality players in a deal for Shaq.) However, if Shaq could go where he could still contend for a title, he might be open to a trade. Now Miami just has to find a team willing to take O'Neal at this point. (Even if you find a team willing, they need to be offering mostly expiring deals in return.) The teams I could see having legit interest: New York, Cleveland, Dallas, and New Jersey. But none of those teams can offer Miami the expiring deals it needs. So at least a third team -- more than likely a 4th -- has to be involved.
