Why do so many fans side with the owners?
A majority of fans always side with management in labor disputes regardless of the sport and regardless of whether it is a lockout or strike. I'm curious for what the reasons are.

Because when 3 teams have been to the Finals from the western conference in the past 10 years, 3 superstars teamed up on the same team, and 20 owners are losing money people tend to realize that the current system is broken.

Because right now the league is losing money. A lot of teams are losing money. That's because most of the revenue goes to the players. The players are also incredibly overpaid. 1985 the average player salary was 300k, and now it's 5 million, with the players proposing an increase there.

People are stupid.
I'll post a link here to the movie Manufacturing Consent which outlines in detail exactly how people's minds are decided for them by the mass media.
90% of people posting this thread wont watch that link. 99% wont get past Part 1.
People are stupid and allow themselves to be led like sheep. It's a major problem the whole world over.

I side with the owners because I understand business.
People too often mistakingly believe that making a profit is good enough. When you've invested hundreds of millions its not. Maybe 20 of 30 (or whatever) are making a profit, that doesn't mean all 20 are making an acceptable return on their investment.
It absolutely doesn't help that some players act like entitled bitches either.

I don't know what you mean by so many, but I think a lot of people that take sides on something like this if they are an average income individual is just stupid. both sides are rich a**holes and they will continue to be that way even after the lockout is over, and you will still be in Debt until you are dead, and then your kids will inherit your debt.

Re: Why do so many fans side with the owners?
They are brainwashed to be quite frank.
The owners have successfully turned the debate into "hard cap = small market teams can finally win", which plucks at the heart strings of a large portion of the NBA fanbase who thinks the reason their team sucks has nothing to do with the idiots making basketball decisions for their organization.
So as fans, they are hopeful their terrible team will be a winner after the new CBA is put in. Unfortunately hard cap or no their inept management will still make terrible decisions and cause their team to continue to suck.

I don't understand why anyone would side with the owners as the players take the best offer on the table and if you overpay for a player you should pay for your mistake. Plus the fact is that the owners claim an accounting loss... not an actual loss and these franchises always appreciate in value so really they have no right to be crying poor

Re: Why do so many fans side with the owners?
I see it from both sides. Why do people keep saying it's the owner's faul though? It's the nature of the game . Do you think teams small market teams enjoy overpaying for mediocre talent? Of course not, if they don't do it, they won't have fans or revenue or be competitive. They HAVE to overpay contracts because it's what the controlled NBA market dictates.
And please don't use the Spurs and Thunder as examples of successful small market teams. Without Tim Duncan and Kevin Durant those teams are lottery every year.
Now you can't fault a player for taking a contract either of course. If someone wants to pay me $200,000/year to mow lawns I'd do it even if I wasn't worth it. That said, you always notice players doing great in the "contract year", which is truly sad. Or guys come to training camp fat and out of shape and take 20 games just to get it going so the owners don't get their money's worth.
Anyways, I see both sides and don't necessarily "side" with either of them, but there's definitely an issue that needs to be resovled, might as well get to it.

Why do you people eat babies?
- They're delicious
- They're cheap and widely available
- Political philosophy

I side with the owners because their side will win the lockout and when that happens, we can get basketball back.

1985 the NBA's TV deal with tbs was 20 million dollars
By December 1989, the NBA had signed four-year contracts with NBC and Turner worth a total of $875 million dollars (over $1.5 billion today). Those contracts replaced the old contract with CBS worth $93 million over four years (valued today at $192 million).
The NBA will receive about $930 million a year for all its broadcast rights, an increase of more than 20 percent from the previous average of $767 million. and they signed the deal after San Antonio's recent four-game sweep of Cleveland finished with a record-low 6.2 television rating and 11 share on ABC.
And if the record NBA ratings they had this year continue to rise they will get even a bigger deal for the 2015-16 season.
Also the league average attendance in 1985 was 11,893 vs today of 17,520.
So the players should go back to average salary of 300k?

Re: Why do so many fans side with the owners?
I side with the owners because the players are (Please Use More Appropriate Word) in how much they're demanding. Of course it is our fault for still going to the games and paying them their salaries, but no one in the world should be making $25 million per year, especially for playing basketball, and I don't care how good they are at throwing a ball into an iron circle (i like basketball much more than it sounds
). Also, when two of the top five paid players (Rashard lewis and Gilbert Arenas) in the league are absolute garbage, the league has to change.

How do you know the league is losing money? Are the teams that are losing money doing so because of the system or due to mismanagement? How many teams would be losing money in this system if the NBA had NFL style revenue sharing?
