Don't you think Michael Jordan is overrated?

Post#1 » by THA6 » Tue Aug 26, 2014 3:05 pm

I enjoy the current era of basketball. Guys are just big, fast, and so strong. I look back at Jordan's era and it seems like he dominated everyone because the competition was so weak. I got to give credit where it's due, the man is 6/6 in the finals. But i look at who he went up against, and the guys guarding him. It's not even close to the defender's we have in today's league.

He didn't have no Paul George, Kawhi Leonard, Tony Allen type defenders guarding him. He was abusing guys who were much smaller, and less athletic. If Jordan played in today's league, he will still be good! don't get me wrong, but there is no way he will go 6 for 6 in the finals in today's league. I can bet my house on that.

That is why when you hear people say Kobe is better, Alot of you on here just laugh at it. If you think about it, Kobe went up against the best, in a tougher western competition. He lost to modern day fast, strong, athletic players. How would he do back when Jordan played? It's all about the competition guys. Race a ferrari with a Lambo. If you Race a Ferrari with a Honda, you are obviously going to lose.

Thoughts?

Jordan at 40 with a 43/10 game vs. your modern day players, including Richard Jefferson who has decent defense.
Jordan also affected the game on both sides of the court and was all-time defensive. Showed in this game with 4 steals and a blocked shot. All at 40.

I don't think MJ was overrated (And I think "overrated" is the wrong word to use) but I do think guys like Bill Russel and Wilt would not be half as dominant if you somehow magically plucked them out of their era and dropped them in the modern NBA.

But then, the real question is, if they were born and raised in the 1990s, and trained today with everything we know about nutrition and sports science, would they be as dominant?

By every account, Wilt was not only massive, but a freak athlete and that was in the 1960s. Give him a modern trainer and a modern diet during his development and maybe he's even more dominant than he was then.. we'll never know, and speculating is pointless.

The fact that some people consider he and Kobe to be be on the same level means he's severely underrated. Michael did it against better competition, with more rigid rules and less help, and he did it more efficiently.

By your logic Issac Newton or Albert Einstein is overrated because there are lots of theoretical physicists that are much more knowledgeable than them right now.

It's time to use my time machine to bring back John Starks and the Detroit bad boy defense, watch them effortlessly take down the top guns in this league.

How old are you OP?

Thats the only logical thing I can think of for why someone made this thread.

You were probably too young to ever watch or understand basketball in the Jordan era.

Nope. Definitely not.

Our memories are short. No one has ever dominated since Jordan. Even LBJ.

Watch tape of how physical teams were with Michael (he ended up scoring anyhow).

Jordan would dominate in today's NBA. He was that special. He's probably the most ruthless NBA athlete of all time. The guy would do whatever it took to win. Nothing mattered more to him.

Obviously never watched MJ play. I can't stand Jordan, but his natural skills and devotion to greatness could never be ignored or overstated. He's certainly not overrated.

I'm not even going to begin on how physical defences played in his time, hand checking, elbows in the paint. If Jordan played today he'd average 24 FT's a game.

Most basketball heads agree that the 80s/90s was the best era in the NBA in terms of competition. Jordan was one of the most skilled offensive players the league has ever seen. He would eat the likes of Paul George and Kawhi Leonard alive.
