I’ll start with your second question…teams can only lower a player’s salary by the same amount they can raise it — either 4.5% or 7.5% of the first-year salary. They can’t go from a huge salary to the vet minimum as you suggest.

The league’s insurance policy covers about 150 players — each team submits five names for consideration, and the carrier can exclude up to 14 contracts per season. The submitted names come from the five highest in terms of current salary and the five highest in terms of total remaining salary. Teams can also submit more than five names for coverage.

I do not know if Harrington is covered this year. If he IS covered, then following a 41-game waiting period (which has now passed), the insurance company pays 80% of his guaranteed base salary, up to $175,000 per game. The benefit continues until either the contract ends or the policy ends, whichever comes first.
