Barely play? Didn't he just start every game for the Heat in the playoffs, play 28+ mpg, and he was basically the 3rd best player on the team during their (longer than our) playoff run? Assuming there isn't just a ridiculous dropoff, I'm not sure why you would think this. It's definitely a risky overpay, we might regret in 2 years, but a washed Amir Johnson? Not even close.
He will barely play here. He is not a SF anymore. We basically signed him for Niang role which he is an upgrade and honestly I hope we move on from Niang because the dude just doesn't care about defense or rebounding.
But you shouldn't need to spend 33m as a contender for what Tucker provides.
The guy can defend big wings and even small centers, is switchable and shoots corner threes. We need players who can actually stay on the court in the PO and Tucker is one of those guys.
Getting that at 11m/year is perfectly fine. It is a bit risky because you don't know when his body will fall apart, but that is simply a risk you need to take for a guy that is desired by every contender in the league.
And to be honest, Harden basically pays for the additional 4m/year he would otherwise receive for a 3 year fully guaranteed deal.
