The
only path? Come on, that's ridiculous. That line of thinking is what emboldens organizations like Minnesota to send out 5 future 1sts & a bunch of key rotational pieces for someone like Gobert out of desperation. Now
their only path to winning a title is indeed through Gobert.
How do you think organizations like Toronto and Miami stay relevant? They stay competitive. They tread water, develop young players, build culture. They stay patient through the ups-and-downs and wait for the right opportunities to be aggressive buyers. Hell, GSW retooled with Wiggins + Poole and won another title. Funny how that works.
I'm not saying Durant isn't worth pursuing, but this fanbase spends far too much time catastrophizing every minor setback, real and perceived, without thinking rationally in the context of the broader future.
The NBA is turning itself upside down every single offseason nowadays. The landscape of the league is evolving. Durant won't be the only opportunity. There will inevitably be another disgruntled star in due time.
We have to maximize investment in player development because two things can happen: we have enough valuable assets to consolidate our talent further at the top in the future or or we develop our next core.
