Powell is a trade piece with an expiring contract and the idiots in charge who let Brunson skate for absolutely nothing are gone so now Nico and Kidd own all the moves they make from here on out.
They got McGee and Wood so that is a good start but Powell and Kleeber are guys that will get us a player back with their expiring contracts and the player we get back will be better than what we give out since these kinds of transactions are usually for guys that are good but stuck on teams that are not contending or even wanting to contend because they are in a race for last place so they can get things underway to rebuild.
If you want to get into these kinds of trades you need to give out draft picks and expiring contracts that allow a tank team to ditch their guys that no longer fit their future direction and situation.
If you want to contend you need a better backup than the guy you need to trade because once he is gone your situation is going to be even worse. They could have attempted to add Orlando and Kofi so they would be better able to protect the rim when an injury sidelines JaValle. They need to have a real center in there for at least part of the game even if you have Wood. I would prefer that player be a vet since we are contending.
Whether or not it is Whiteside or Cousins, whoever is the guy they want they are in a waiting game at this point for all the money to dry up and then they need to find a rookie to develop that has more promise than Bingham unless they feel he was able to show something worth keeping him on.
Miami may keep 4 centers but I doubt that Utah keeps 5.
A couple of things.
It's Kleber, not Kleeber.
And you're way to high on rookies. You really think a second round or an undrafted center could do a better job on the mavs than Powell? No way in hell, I can pretty much guarantee that Powell is much much more capable of contributing this season and next few seasons than Kofi is. Center's need longer to develop than G/Fs. I'd even say there's a very realistic chance Kofi will never ever be as good as Powell.
So no, I don't think we need another center, especially a long shot project one. Nor do we need another backup with McGee, Wood, Kleber, Powell and Bertans all being above 6'10. Powell is good enough for the 4th string center
If he does get traded, then they should sign a minimum vet guy instead, not a green rookie. But playmaking and a 3&D wing are a bigger need right now than another Javale like player.
