That would be about as interesting as keeping Jefferson/Millsap to play for the 8 seed.
The decision to go that direction set the team back a decade. Once the Gobert trade went down, Utah's fate was sealed. If Utah wanted to retool they should have kept Gobert and traded DM for other win now pieces. Trading Gobert to retool around Mitchell would be a move that should get everyone involved canned.
I’m not saying it is what the Jazz should do, but if they don’t get what they want for Mitchell and were to pivot and trade for Myles Turner
how would the team do? While there would certainly be a drop off on defense, a healthy and motivated Turner is a good rim protector, yet gives the added dimension of shorting range that Gobert didn’t have.
They would be fighting for a playin spot. Miles Turner, even healthy and motivated, isn't even a poor man's Gobert. It's a significant downgrade. If the Jazz couldn't get it done with Gobert, the best player on the team for miles and miles, and the best player the Jazz have had on the team in the last 20 years, they aren't getting anything done with Turner.
Not to mention Conely and Bogey are a year older, and we traded away our only other player that attempted defense (no, Pat Bev is not changing our perimeter defense).
Obviously the Jazz have some trade pieces from the Wolves, and even Clarkson and Bogey are tradeable, but all those players are lateral moves at most. None of those players are going to net us pieces to build around Donovan that will make us a better team then we were before. There is nothing we can do to makes us better than we were before with Mitchell on the team.
When you trade your best player, it's rebuild time. I've never seen a team be able to be more competitive than an 8 seed after trading their best player. Teams have tried, and they have fought for and 8th seed for years, before finally rebuilding. Which is what they should have done from the beginning instead of wasting everyone's time for 5-8 years.
