They've had a ton of GMs in Dolan's time and they keep failing for different reasons that focus on those two things, try to win too quickly then get crap luck at rebuilding and then repeat since they think there's a fast-forward button to make up for that.
Feels like those aren't stemming form Dolan so much as he's not able to stop them, which seems way less direct and way more passive a role than some of these other owners.
It's entirely on Dolan. He always hires based on who can sell him on a quick turnaround plan and never seeks out seasoned executives with a track record of success who bring forth a longer vision. The faults you cite in the GMs under him are abiding by his precise hiring criteria and he does it over and over again, sometimes rehiring the same people who **** things up to begin with. It's why I fear what would happen if he has a knee jerk reaction to missing out on Mitchell. The unseasoned guys he hires need a little longer to settle in. If they're constantly fearing his hand coming down it increases the likelihood they do something stupid. Then, because they screw up so badly in a panic, he fires and hires another green fool and the process starts over.
Eggsactly. Dolan is the one who hired all these guys. And he thought he was outsmarting the league and staying a step ahead. It's his fault because he basically never actually hires somebody with front office experience lol.
He hired Phil Jackson because the plan was for him to flash his 11 champ;ipnsikp[ ringhsand free agents would be on their knees begging to join the Knicks.
Isiah Thomas was a former coach and got a job as Knicks president. We all know all the chances he got.
He hired Leon Rose because he was a player agent and has "relations" around the league.
Same with the Steve Mills and Scott Perry duo. Apparently these guys had "relations" around the league and players liked them and they would bring in Durant, Butler, or Leonard lol.
The last GM he hired that was a proven executive with a track record, was maybe Donnie Walsh. Who wasn't bad, but was an old man getting up their in age. He wasn't strong enough to hold his ground. And Dolan meddled. There's the rumors of him getting Isiah Thomas to make sure Amar're was signed to the full max when the Suns were only willing to give 2 years guaranteed. Then there's the Melo stuff. I liked what Donnie was doing but it's an impossible job to do if the owner doesn't give you full autonomy.
I said this many times. If Leon Rose fails. I want the Dolan to hire the most boring president and GM possible. I want somebody fairly unknown. No inside hires. No former players. No former coaches. No former agents or whatever. Basically a younger Donnie Walsh, but having Dolan stay the fck away.
