Thad's got a knee injury apparently. And Otto will be out for a little bit due to a hamstring issue.

Otto has been injury prone for majority of his career. Sucks it's a hamstring injury. Could be out for awhile.

Scottie made that 360 look effortless, then proceeded to do the same with that switcheroo layup.

Hyped.

The whole team is wings. Birch is hurt, too. Our big depth is Precious/Koloko right now. Champagnie (because they believe in his potential) or Wilson (because he can play PnR and defend the 5).

Wilson isnt a wing hes a small ball 5. If Porter, OG and Thad are out, that only leaves hernangomez. I can only see champagnie or jackson making it

With the Bulls, there was word at the time that Otto isn't the most dedicated guy when it comes to practice and taking care of his body. Hamstring exercises are probably the least fun form of exercise, but ya still gotta do them every workout.

Here's to hoping OG can stay healthy this year and silence some of his critics. I just have this feeling he's about to have himself the best season of his career

I really am curious to see what improvements GTJ has made to his game. Almost feels like nobody is expecting anything from him in terms of growth.

What's fun is that almost every team is proclaiming improvements in players and everyone in great shape.

I was at the scrimmage with my wife and daughter.

Here are some random thoughts:

Crowd could have been much louder, they only really got hyped when merch was being thrown into the crowd.
Same thing when team Canada was in town for the game against Argentina. Crowd wasn't that loud then either.

Nick was sitting next to Bobby the during the scrimmage, Masai was there for a bit but took off.

Scottie def. played it up to the crowd when he was announced doing a pretend superman shirt rip as he came out of the tunnel. He pointed to every corner trying to get everyone cheering.
Pascal looks taller than Scottie
Still feel like Pascal had the loudest cheers though.
After all the talk of Scottie being a better shooter he was pretty much bricking every shot during warm up.
He definitely kept close to O.G. the whole warm up.
O.G. is huge with legs like tree trunks and he was on fire, lots of running the floor for easy dunks, a great 3 that I think video was posted earlier.
He also had a couple blocks as well.
He didn't slip and fall once. This was too easy for him.
Looks like he's in mid season form.

Pascal started a bit slow but caught fire and he looks so smooth and effortless out there
Huge smiles and lots of dancing from him the whole time which is always a good sign.
Not worries about him at all.

Didn't focus on Fred too much other than when he was on the bench in front of us. My daughter is 8 years old and a huge Fred fan so she stood behind him and just stood there during timeouts just watching him.
He looked good from what i remember. Definitely slimmed down.

Gary looked good. Lots of interaction with guys on the team. Passed off taking threes for a better pass. Had a great pass into the post after everyone thought he was going to shoot.
Gary was waving at my daughter during a timeout which was pretty nice of him.

Delano's first play of the game was great. Faked a 3 and went in for a dunk.
Had a couple decent strips on D
But nothing else of note.
Kept trying to mentally will him to be better but it didn't work.
I thought he played better than Malachi at the beginning but they both didn't do much. Malachi started scoring a bit later.
Downton didn't do much.
Juancho looked comfortable. He knows how to play which I think is a good sign. Seems like a good glue guy if that makes sense.
Huge Huge Huge drop off between the starters and the bench.
Hard to judge how the bench will work especially since Thad and Otto didn't play.but the bench could continue to be the biggest issue this year.
Koloko def looked better compared to summer league but he still has bad hands.
Boucher is definitely better than the rest of the bench players that played.
He had lots of activity but didn't score much.
Scottie definitely didn't do much. Lots of F****ng around. Wasn't really involved until a bit later but didn't make much of an impact.
They only played 3 10 minute quarters. The starters sat out the 3rd quarter.
Harper Jr did pretty well in that 3rd quarter. He shot looks terrible still. Definitely lost some weight since summer league.
Precious def tried to do a lot but not much really happened.
I didn't pay any attention to defensive rotations.

Takeaways:
It was a fun day for the family.
Hard to see what the bench will look like without seeing Otto and Thad out there but without them I see big issues. But it's not like Nick runs two separate units like Casey did in the old days, so there will probably be a lot of mix and matching guys.
I can see Nick running with one of Fred or Pascal always being on the floor at all times as a ball handler since i didn't see much from Banton and Malachi.
So nice to see some ball.

Let's NBA!!!!!
I ate myself out of the league cause I was fat and slow

Champagnie has some credit in the bank as he established himself as a hard worker and positive presence while with Toronto on a two-way contract last season. He’s somewhat of a ‘tweener in that his skills and his strengths — he has a remarkable nose for the ball which shows up on the offensive glass, especially — are more suited for a power forward but his size — he’s just six-foot-six — requires him to be able to space the floor and shoot. He’s made progress but was hampered this summer when he suffered a fractured thumb and had to miss some crucial development time.

Champagnie’s first few seconds on the floor were typical: he came out of nowhere to grab an offensive rebound to gain a possession, was first to a loose ball to keep it alive and then scored a three-point play. It’s the kind of opportunism that’s hard to teach. He did look good knocking down one triple but missed two more a little wildly.

Jackson is intriguing. His pedigree is high end. The six-foot-eight leaper was the No.1 recruit out of his high school class, was Big 12 player of the year in his one season at Kansas, was a Summer League all-star and made second-team all-rookie with the Suns, where he played for current Raptors assistant Earl Watson. He can score and has shown the ability to be disruptive defensively.

“I would say his strength lies at the defensive end,” said Nurse. “We feel like he’s one guy who has had some success and experience of full denying a player and playing with some speed and athleticism and some length, to be just one of those guys who is a nuisance on defence. That’s kind of his thing. That’s why we have him in and we’re looking at him.”

That Jackson is with his fifth organization is intriguing as well: he’s had a number of off-court disciplinary issues that stretch back to his lone season at Kansas.

At 25, the hope is that all of that is behind him and he can kind find a way to use his talent to earn a steady NBA job.

Wilson is another interesting prospect. He was taken 17th overall by Milwaukee in the 2017 draft and spent four years with the team before being traded to Houston for P.J. Tucker as the Bucks loaded up for their 2021 championship run. He’s the kind of long and agile defender the Raptors like but working against him is the fact the roster is swimming in players who mirror his skill set.

Neither Jackson, Champagnie or Wilson did much to advance or harm their cause on what was a fun night for the crowd but had meaning for those trying to carve out a spot on a roster that will be tough to crack.

They’ll get another chance on Sunday in Edmonton, and the coaching staff will be watching.

“We do a staff vote every single day,” said Nurse. “And that vote changes every single day. You can tell it’s competitive.”

These kinds of observations are tough to prove without knowing for sure from the source like coaches for Toronto, but guys like Gabe Brown and Josh Jackson have something a bit off. It is not about talent, because they both look like NBA athletes and Brown can really shoot it.

I just wonder about their body language and work habits. They look the part of NBA rotation players, but something else has to be off because on paper you have:

JJ
Lotto pick who developed with the Suns
6'8 size
NBA athlete with moderate handle
decent block and steal percentage

Gabe Brown
38% from three in four years in college
6'7
NBA athlete

Normally the reason why guys go undrafted or sign camp deals is because they are borderline NBA players. These guys don't seem to give off the impression there is a talent or size/athleticism deficit. This brings me to coachability and effort. Toronto prides itself on high character athletes. I wonder if these are projects where we need to fix the motor. It is why I prefer Champagnie because he his a high effort, know your role type. Brown, is really intriguing to me, if he has fixed his own effort issues which dogged him in college.

Or it could be IQ rather than attitude/motor/coachability
