Brunson wanted to leave and was a UFA, how he got to be a UFA is a different question. Clearly Brunson wanted his own team, that wasn't going to happen here.
Dragic isn't really that good even if he's better than campazzio
They should go get Kemba or bring back Trey Burke
Rick Brunson (his dad and also manager i believe), offered 55/4 deal to Mavs earlier in the season but Mavs said no. Through entire year there were rumors floating that Brunson could be traded for a better player or players but Cuban was telling everyone that there is no chance Mavs will let Jalen go. He always laughed when asked about it.
Now, here is the most embarrassing part (if that was not embarrassing enough)... Rick told Jalen to prepare himself to be a Mav for life and his family were ready for that and, Cuban with his massive ego, had entire season to act but just couldn't do the right thing. Rick offered Mavs almost the same money that Powell is earning but he got declined, that's absurd.
Next thing where Mavs clearly fumbled the ball is when they gambled on him thinking that they got this in the bag but with Jalen playing decent in the playoffs suddenly winds shifted when business kicked in and Rick was eventually fed up with Mavs. Jalen obviously went for the bigger bag and change of scenery.
And another massive head scratcher, why Mavs didn't make Jalen RFA? Doesn't matter who was the GM.. When **** happens, Cuban is always somehow involved. He literally got gifted Luka by 3 organizations and struck insane luck with Brunson, obviously he couldn't get almost anything right since then.
Here are quotes from the article directly from Rick Brunson.
Dallas could have signed Brunson to a four-year extension for as much as $55.5 million before the season, but the Mavs didn’t offer it then nor did they engage in negotiations with Brunson’s representatives.
Nor were the Mavs willing to make that commitment midseason
I told him once the season is started, that’s it,” Rick Brunson says. “I told the Mavericks, ‘Once the season is started, there’s no contract talk,’ and I went back against my word. In January, I thought he did enough where he deserved [the extension]. I said, ‘Hey, take the money, man.’ He wants security. He wants to live here. And they declined.
He didn’t turn s— down. Y’all declined first. When y’all came back to him, we said, ‘Hey, we just want to finish out the season and go from there.'”
