I'm definitely not on board with the "England is underachieving again" takes.
My opinion The reality is that they assemble teams that are consistently good, but not great. If anything they have solidly overachieved.
For instance in Russia 2018, they got all the way to semis, losing to Croatia, without necessarily beating anyone along the way that they weren't obviously supposed to beat. They beat Sweden and Colombia to get there and had lost to Belgium in the group matches.
At delayed Euro-2020, again they get all the way to the finals and lose to Italy, yet the teams they faced on their way there... they upset Germany 2-0 and had an easier walk the rest of the way, vs Denmark and Ukraine.
The aspect that taints England as chokers is that they are comically overrated by... well... themselves. Their insane media and overhyped footballing ethos.
My opinion may be biased of course. My POV is that of someone who saw their national team do this to them:
And this:
And this:
That was an entire generation of English footballers that was seemingly born to suffer against Portugal. Man for man, they were always inferior.
