Kessler the new Gobert?

Post#1 » by mcmurphy » Fri Dec 16, 2022 8:35 am

The progression of Kessler's statistics and Gobert's second year are practically identical...
Has Utah put the new Gobert under contract for the next 3 seasons for a total of 10 millions?

Kessler (2022-23, 21 years old, 7-1, rookie)
games 1-13 14.9mpg, 5.6ppg, 5.4reb, 0.7ast, 1.6blk, 1.8pf, 0.68ts%,
games 14-27 18.6mpg, 6.9ppg, 6.7reb, 0.4ast, 2.1blk, 2.4pf, 0.75ts%

Gobert (2014-15, 22 years old, 7-1, sophomore)
games 1-13 16.1mpg, 5.4ppg, 4.7reb, 0.6ast, 1.4blk, 1.6pf, 0.67ts%
games 14-27 19.2mpg, 5.9ppg, 6.6reb, 0.9ast, 2.1blk, 2.0pf, 0.65ts%

Statistically similar based on those numbers above. However Kessler is alot quicker running the floor and has a softer touch around the basket. I think he has the potential to be alot better than Gobert. Whether he achieves that is the question.

yeah, good things happen when Kessler is on the court...

last 5 games against GSW, DEN, MIN, 2xNOP the progression continue

23.8mpg, 9.6ppg, 10.2reb, 2.8blk, 0.8to, 3.2pf

good defence, with low turnover and not so high fouls (for a rookie)

I dont know how he had only 8 boards last night. It looked like he grabed at least 20.
IMO he was most important player for the Jazz even though Clarkson and Markannen scored 70pts...

I would put him in All-Rookie 1st team as of now.

His game resembles Jarrett Allen more than Gobert to me. On a good path in either case.

He looks pretty good. I don't think he looks like a long term starting caliber player because he's fairly limited. He's mostly just a drop big who's good in the post.

He's clearly not Gobert level defensively and doesn't have much of an offensive game outside of 3ft.

What?

Man this sure is a take. In a redraft he wouldn't even go top 10

A difference from Will Hardy compared to Quin Snyder is they don't run many pick and roll lobs. Seems like they are leaving points on the table there with Kessler and Vanderbuilt both being capable.

It's hilarious how this is the standard response to basically everything now. So lazy and basically just outs you as having nothing informative to contribute

I have watched enough to see what he is (a drop big who's a solid rim protector and post player). Probably the least important player archetype in modern basketball.

Players not named Paolo that OP would apparently take Kessler over:

Chet (lmfao)
Jabari
Keegan
Mathurin
Ivey
Dyson Daniels
Jalen Williams
Tari Eason
AJ Griffin
Jalen Duren

I'd wager that most GMs are also taking Sharpe, Dieng, and Sochan over him too without a second thought

Please make a case that he's better than any of these guys. Can't wait.

better FG%, better TS%, higher PER, more blocks, more rebounds, better defensive rating, better defensive box +/-, better ws/48. and i could go on, but the case has been made.

Kessler is not the new Gobert.
Gobert is the old Kessler.

Kessler is extremely limited offensively [even compared to Gobert]. His role reminds me of young Robert Williams where he played limited minutes in an extremely limited and nurtured role being asked to do 1 or 2 things and put up excellent rate statistics.

Time will tell what Kessler becomes but he has the tools to become a Poeltl level center in the league.
