I thought the deal is not done until end of today. That makes things interesting if Ishbia already has control. I did find this quote from him from his press conference:

"I think we’re in a great position right now. Will I be involved? Yes. Are we highly active? Yes. But at the same time, I think we have a championship-contending team without doing anything over the next 2 days.”

https://www.si.com/nba/suns/news/mat-ishbia-speaks-on-phoenix-suns-activity-at-trade-deadline

This might be the Suns rolling with what they got and only trading Crowder. Huge impacts for Toronto if that is the case.

Deal was finalized yesterday.

Not that I think it matters but Board of Governors approved sale yesterday but actual sale final later today.
When will we just change the name of 25 of the 30 teams to the Washington Generals?

Please advise….

It is not as if the Nets are going to ask for a lot less in the summer. They will just have longer to play it out. The deadline is forcing a deal on all parties. This sounds like teams trying to lower the Nets asking price at the deadline.

The Nets probably just want another run with KD regardless.

As for us, everyone may be forgetting that if we trade some of the starters now and tank, our most coveted asset may shift from Siakam and OG to our potentially very good lotto pick.

That's a pretty big incentive for us to wait and risk wasting a year.

Not really, its a pretty flawed plan to empty out all your best assets for a 35 year old, OFTEN injured KD WITHOUT the proper supporting cast (considering Pascal & OG would be gone) and then very limited ability to add to it.

In my own imaginary scenario, we just trade Fred for salary ballast and picks at deadline.

Offseason: We then send Gary - maybe even get to keep him - and most of the ballast with our lottery pick plus other picks to keep the vision core together.

That would require some lottery luck, but that's the way to make the KD trade work.

(If you're thinking "wait a minute is he trading the #2!?!?!". That's exactly why the Nets would accept an offer that doesn't touch most of our contending core and allows us to add to it with other assets. Because it's a painful choice)

I really hope Nurse's perspective isn't the same as management's.

It sounded like Nick thought we're supposedly "turning the corner" *facepalm

I don't see the Raps as a serious suitor for KD. But for the other teams interested in him, like the Suns, they need to make the deal now. They need every playoff run they can possibly get out of KD

It is the Toronto management and coaching staff that worry me most. I feel like management is too enamoured by their own players and set unrealistic goals for trades which other teams balk at. The coach doesn't know how to be flexible in his schemes, so you kind of can only target guys who will thrive in it.

I still think the wait is on Phoenix to have Sarver officially out which is tomorrow. Sarver has veto on any trade greater than $10m, and you don't want to risk him rejecting a deal as final salute to their organization. We have a lot of Klutch guys which Sarver refused to deal with for years.

My take on it is different. It's possible I am the one who is wrong but here it is:
Our management is aware of their players value. They try to extract good value out of the trade. They
would rather wait the offseason and wait for a better option than make a trade.

That being said I hope good offers are there to be taken in which case they probably will and they are simply negotiating and/or trying to piggyback on Irving deal

That is a good way to look at things -focus on getting good value. I just think you lose control over FVV and Trent because you have to hope for a sign and trade in the offseason for them - deals should be done now for those two. OG becomes an expiring deal at the start of July 1 so you lose a bit of advantage trading him in the offseason. For Pascal, it is fair to wait until July because he has a big salary and he is probably our best current player.

The biggest piece is this draft. Keeping this crew together likely takes us out of high lottery position given our weak schedule. Ideally, you'd like Toronto to be in the bottom 6 to get the best talent available, plus you want a couple more firsts to get some of the other good players later in the draft, or to package for a player. 2023 is a huge draft year and next year will be a weak draft class.

This management group loves to listen, but they haven't made a ton of great moves since the Kawhi year. It is a path where we don't know if they are adding to this group or tearing down despite being 5 games below .500. It seems like other teams have no clue about our direction either.

Forgot that we have a fresh, idiot new owner to fleece.

The typical pattern here is they **** up so bad, give away the farm and set their team back 5 years until they realize they need to step back.

Gotta pounce after the Durant hangover this summer.

Word around the league is that the Raptors asking price for the young wing is extremely high.

Pay up or GTFO
They wanted to send us Simmons I bet.

I agree. Be careful. If real GM’s are anything like RealGM, valuation on Ben Simmons is all over the place. Hopefully Ujiri realizes this guy is one of the NBA’s worst contracts. He has more personal fouls than made baskets!

But I will point out that the Nets waived Kessler Edwards to create a roster space. Teams have a greater likelihood to need a roster space when they trade a larger salary, and get two smaller ones back. If the Nets aren’t trading Durant, the next large salary is Simmons.

I wonder if we'd engage on a Simmons+picks for FVV+Boucher deal. Nurse can experiment with all-defensive lineups while we maintain or improve our draft position.

Guy knows basketball and is a smart businessman... I doubt there going to be any fleecing going on. He not the average billionaire playing with a new toy. He's a hardcore basketball lifer. That said so is MJ so that doesn't mean he'll be a good owner. But I suspect he'll do just fine.
