The issue is that you have the same team next year minus Gary but you have a couple of second rounders. You cant use Gary’s cap space, as we are above the cap. So to management its either get worse next year and be capped and lose gary and add no one, or replace Gary with Jakob.
Basically means Masai will absolutely not tank. MLSE doesn’t want to have a capped out team that is trash, and they want to get revenue from at least one round of playoffs next year if we will be operating above the cap.
Its either that or you tear it all down for picks, and I dont see Masai ever doing it no matter how much some would want that.
You can play with your salary by taking on a team's bad 2 year contract. The Nets will gladly give you Joe Harris with some compensation thrown in.
You don't delude yourself into thinking Poetl is worth your draft assets the way FO seems to think.
If we trade Trent for Harris and a pick in 2028/2029 from BKN you mean? But that means you have Harris on your payroll, probably a worse year next year. maybe you use that 2028 BkN pick in a package for a star in the future but that means your tanking for the next few years.
Sure lets give Barnes a couple of losing years, by the time 2028 rolls around and we still have that pick maybe we draft a player that will be good in 2 to 3 years from then which would take you to 2031. Barnes first RFA is in 2025, the end of that contract takes you to 2029/2030.
So how is this draft pick helping you retain Barnes. Maybe all that losing turns Barnes into another VC/Bosh and he leaves. Then your treadmill continues
I would rather keep competing and wait to pounce on a trade for a star when it becomes available
The Lakers just turned a useless expiring contract and draft capital into three rotation players.
The FO can do the exact same thing in the offseason or next deadline if they want with whatever analog to the Harris (or any other contract)/picks package they acquired.
In the meantime, that useless contract can help the team tank the last bit of the season the same way we got Barnes.
There is no scenario where the FO is somehow handcuffed into making this Poetl mistake. There are multiple paths to the same outcomes without surrendering a first round pick for a UFA.
