Let the homer moderators try to sell you that we somehow didn't lose here.
Well first of all, it's not quite $3M. Up until this point, the Lakers have been writing Beverley's checks, not the Magic. Given the stage of the season we're in, the increase in salary would be closer to $1M than $3M, and that number could go lower depending on how much he might agree to sacrifice in a buyout. Second, despite Weltman's disappointing history with 2nd round draft picks, that doesn't necessarily define any future 2nd round draft picks. If anything, today showed that they can have some value if you combine enough of them together. And to be clear, we're talking strictly about out-of-pocket money from ownership, not salary cap. Because it truly is an effectively identical swap in terms of cap, since Bamba's contract was not guaranteed.
If there was a loss, it happened four and a half years ago when the Magic drafted Bamba instead of someone who would have succeeded in becoming a core piece. This trade, in and of itself, is not a loss. Any potential gain might be negligible, but it's not a loss. That's not homerism, it's just simple fact.
11/18/2017 - I have officially disowned Nikola Vucevic and branded him a loser.
- Skal Labissiere was my guy in 2016 pre-trade. Whoops, but I still believe.
- Malik Monk was my guy in 2017. Whoops(?)
- Mo Bamba was my guy in 2018. TBD.
