But like I alluded to above, the entire report thing is flawed because it’s agenda driven. 99% of the posters here not named Hal won’t ever report anything, and just let things run it’s course.
But me getting warned for replying to me being told that I’m “embarrassing myself” or that I changed my name to hide from my horrible takes? Nah, that’s not what the report button was made for.
This is why we had to take away a certain posters ability to report in the past, because he was only reporting attacks from posters he didn’t like.
I get what you're saying. I'll do a better job of looking back over the thread to see who said what before giving future warnings etc.
That said, even if the other guy started it there is a "no personal attacks" rule on RGM. Using the report button would be preferable to ratcheting up a fight.
For me as a mod, my goal isn't really to discipline people and get them "in trouble." It's more to diffuse situations and help them avoid discipline. So it would be great if that could happen here and we all moved on.
I agree with most of this but what I kind of find troubling is that modding is seemingly done on a report basis only. It’s kind of shocking to know that mods don’t necessarily read threads that they are supposed to be moderating
Great point homer….which can lead potentially sometimes to just looking at the username and not the actual substance of the conversation as a whole and occasionally policing the wrong person making a hard thankless job even harder
