Doc and Trez would have made us lose in the second round even if there was no bubble.

Clippers were coming into their own before the lockdown. We were 44-20 (25-6 H, 19-14 A. They had went 20-9 (9-5 A) since the start of 2020 and had won and 7 of their last 8. The lock down allowed teams to reset and allowed players to get in physical training that they wouldn't have been able to do otherwise (e.g. LeBron, Jokic). The lockdown also had roster impacts because of the way players were dealing with the situation personally.

In the last month or so leading up to the hiatus, we had lost a frustrating statement game to the Lakers, made Malik Beasley and Shake Milton look like prime Steph, got blown out twice by the Kings, etc. The red flags were glaring even if the record looked good on paper. Besides, we could have gone 82-0 and it wouldn't have mattered once Doc got the bright idea to put Trez on Jokic all series.

That team never looked right to me all season, kind of like a less extreme version of this year's team. I had already been calling a first/second round exit for months before COVID, even correctly predicting that it would be Doc's fault for overplaying his favorites and making no adjustments. Easiest call in the world.

This AGAIN?? smdh

You're correct. The thing that's always missed is how dependent that team was on Lou & Trezz. Neither was ready to play--Lou for the Lemon Chicken incident, Trezz because he fell out of shape and was traumatized by the death of his grandmother, whom he called "Mom" [and I think he has NEVER recovered :( ].

When they couldn't play effectively, we all know what happened next.

Those Lou Trezz off the bench teams were frauds, fun sure, but they gave up way too many points on the other end. Just bad roster construction spearheaded by a stubborn coach who was also in charge of roster construction. We weren’t anything but another brick in the wall to contenders.

With Kawhi and PG eating up the lion's share of the salary cap and no real tradable assets, there was not much flexibility. And at $6M a year Trezz outearned his contract better than almost anyone in Clipper history.

As for blaming Doc, this was 2019-20. Doc was demoted from Front Office duties in 2017.

“It is what it is” is the best way to categorize those years IMO. They were a lot of fun to watch, but their upside was a .500 level team. The comeback against the Warriors was a high point even if they weren’t going to win the series.

The ESP pick n rolls with Lou and Trezz still amaze me to this day when I see highlight clips.

Malone and Stockton worked together like that.
Embiid and Harden are working together like that.

Blake and CP3 never worked together like that.
Kawhi and PG aren't working together like that.

Eye test. Stat me wrong. :(
