Oh, I agree that the team would be better with a PG and Spence is not the answer. I'm just not sold that it has to be an all star player (i.e: Trae, FVV)
Team needs a primary ball handler that can properly set up an offense but also score as needed. The modern NBA right now has many players like this who aren't the prototypical PG.
If Trae was a FA, I'd actually be more open to it because the NEts would have assets to get a true #1 player in a trade. However giving up tons of assets for (in my opinion) a #2, seems like a ceiling limiting move.
But who are these players literally and specifically?
Leaving out bench players for simplicity:
The best examples of wings/bigs as primary ball handlers:Jokic
Luka
LBJ
Sabonis
Middleton (Khris handles the ball in crunch time + bench mins)
Corpse of Ben Simmons
Draymond sometimes
"Combo" Guards who are primary ball handlers (basically Dinwiddie):Steph (He and Draymond are basically the offense creators)
SGA
Jrue
Dame
Harden
Mitchell
Marcus Smart
Westbrook
CJ McCollum
The current prototypical PGs (off the top of my head) are:CP3
Haliburton
Trae
Garland
Brunson
Conley
Well this is where I’m going with this…
I figured you’d come up with a good list and you didn’t disappoint, but the problem is, very few of those guys are attainable.
Trae, Dame, CP3 and Conley are probably the only truly realistic ones and 2 of them are over the hill, 1 on the cusp and 1 is a defensive sieve with rumors of diva behavior.
McCollum might be available, but he’s getting up there in age too and unless it’s for Dinwiddie, Cam and Harris, is a questionable get, asset-cost-wise as well.
