Nothing made much sense about drafting Obi Toppin at the time, and it had nothing to do with how good he was as a player. He was a National Player of the year guy leading a small team to a #1 seed in the NCAA tournament. But he also didn't fit the roster at all.
Everything starts to make a ton of sense when you consider Leon Rose had just made a career change, was trying his hand at drafting for an NBA team for the first time, and his son was a newly minted agent with his first client - Obi Toppin.
THAT aspect of this whole situation is nauseating; it's not really about Obi as a player to me - bust or not. Leon went into the big pool with water wings on - He was 100% playing checkers and not chess with the 8th overall pick in a deep draft. Just thoroughly unprepared and blinded by nepotism.
