Nothing made much sense about drafting Obi Toppin at the time, and it had nothing to do with how good he was as a player. He was a National Player of the year guy leading a small team to a #1 seed in the NCAA tournament. But he also didn't fit the roster at all.

Everything starts to make a ton of sense when you consider Leon Rose had just made a career change, was trying his hand at drafting for an NBA team for the first time, and his son was a newly minted agent with his first client - Obi Toppin.

THAT aspect of this whole situation is nauseating; it's not really about Obi as a player to me - bust or not. Leon went into the big pool with water wings on - He was 100% playing checkers and not chess with the 8th overall pick in a deep draft. Just thoroughly unprepared and blinded by nepotism.

You think so? I mean he’s definitely not going to be a super star, probably not a star, but I definitely think he’s a solid role-player/contributor given time, and sadly in today’s NBA getting that out of a lottery pick outside the top 2-3 is acceptable. I still think we undersold but who knows, maybe you’re right.

i think i remember reading we were trying to get at least a 1st round pick for him. since last year. but i dont think anyone valued him like that

My wish list was basically 3 guys...then went back and forth with the other options..Obi was out of my top 10.
1. LaMelo
2. Hayes
3. Haliburton

my goal would be to have a star guard, a star wing, and a 2 way center. obi would be a great fit for that + he's a hometown kid. i hate that our 2nd best player is a ball dominant pf. i'll root for him as long as he wears the uniform just like i did this year but in offseason mode i gotta be honest that i don't like the outlook of a team committed to randle

Our pg was Elf at the time too.

We had no one to help create offense for obi. Just a completely dumb draft choice.

Not to beat a dead horse, but Leon’s boss is Mr. Nepotism. If anyone understands why Sammy needs a Lambo, it’s Jim Dolan.

Didn’t hurt that Obi was a dunk champion old enough to play right away. Classic Knick pick.

Haliburton never stood a chance and neither did anyone with hopes of MSG trading away a 20/10 veteran in Randle.

I have no issues with Randle outside of the fact he’s a head case. When he’s focused he’s a great player. My issues stem more from the fact that the Knicks as an organization treat first round picks like old ladies treat shoes.

randle is a choker so whatever he's capable of in a vacuum is heavily tarnished by that imo

This is what I want. Give me a Kurt Thomas pf who isn't mentally weak and plays hard. Boxes out, spaces the floor, and makes the opposing team hurt after the game.

I don't need a goofy running pf who can't defend.

But is that who you want? Who else is there? What about DFS?

Randle has not been good in the playoffs but he did contribute to the regular season success of the team. He needs a sports shrink badly.

you wanted to draft hayes over hali and edwards though. and i remember you were high on poku and okoro :o

i never denied i liked obi coming out of the draft. but once i saw him play as a rookie i knew he was bad goods. i said to ship him away after like 1 month of seeing him play

his one fluke game winner against miami came after he mishandled the ball twice at the end of a game. even when he was "clutch" he was choking. i respect randle's abilities and i rooted for him hard all year. just calling a spade a spade

I was never crazy about Okoro. That was shams guy.

Poku was a mystery. I Wouldn’t have minded him with a later pick or 2nd pick to swing for the fences.

I would have picked LaMelo if we had a top 3 pick so didn’t really mention Edwards. I was also low on your guy Wiseman, and was higher on Maxey.…some misses, some hits. It was a crazy draft.
