I can't recall the last time I saw a report saying that Ben Simmons or Markel Fultz was being sought by any team. Yes I understand that McConnell is only a 8 + million dollar player, but it's pretty Ironic. McConnell the least talented of the 3 has never stopped working to improve. Good for him.

True. But I mean, they’ve gone deep in the playoffs including a Finals birth just about every year with that core. Don’t really see another realistic option.

I get the idea that they are almost forced to sign him because they have gone all-in on building around this pair, but it is this kind of move that generally signals the beginning of the end for a group.
Now more than ever, it is imperative to win before your core ages and you have to pay these crazy salaries - MIL is a classic example of a team that got their chip at the perfect time. The Celtics had really good shots for the last few seasons and didn't get it done, and now their depth will begin to be eroded. I can honestly see a step back in 2023 for them.

Then again, I have a history of railing against the NBA’s salary structure. Teams are held hostage by the low soft cap and inability to replace lost players. It’s silly when most the league understands that in a majority of cases you are better off operating as a team over the cap than under the cap.
Might as well make the 2nd threshold the hard cap and the soft cap a salary floor and do away with all of these exemptions. The league would be better off for it. Especially if teams can feel comfortable letting a guy who will make potentially $60mil walk and replace him with 4 guys in the $15-20mil range.

you "overpay" him for that alone.

Agreed. I want to hear the tune when Maxey is due for a 200M+ extension for a team that can’t get out the second round.

Everyone loves kid Maxey now. Just wait until he's getting Tobias Harris money...

The difference is Maxey is making leaps each season and is only 22 years old. We can only hope his first big contract is justified by even more progression.
When Harris was given his ludicrous deal, he was 28 years old. It was a safe bet to say the writing was on the wall. The ceiling was realized if you followed TH's career. Not many players make the jump in talent/ability from 28-31 as compared to from 22 to 25.
I really like Maxey, but I know what his game lacks. However, I'm already more enamored with his ability compared to the TH who was passed around the league and on his 3rd team by age 23. Maxey has already showed the guts on offense not only during the RS but also the playoffs. The fear we see in TH's game isn't in Maxey's IMO.

Oh I think Maxey will be better than Tobias. I just think he’ll have so much more pressure and scrutiny when he’s making $40 mil per year. Like dude has to be Jamal Murray or Devin Booker in the playoffs or else our fans are gonna eat him alive.

Here’s the thing. Let’s say the team doesn’t get past the second round again and Maxey has a year similar to the one he just had. Are you going to say he’s not worth a 5/200M extension he’ll likely command?
