generally it’s whatever. Like using a roster spot on Thanasis makes no sense to me, but if that’s what it takes it’s fine. Also think using a roster space on RoLo is a waste but we did it anyways lol

Be serious now lol.

I don't want to waste a roster spot on whatever you want to call Thanasis. I don't have it out for Giannis. All I want is greatness.

What if you're GM and Giannis demands you keep his brother, or he leaves. What would you do?

You keep his brother.

And it **** sucks that you have to.

I just don't think it's that big of a deal I guess. Now, if Thanasis got playing time, then it'd be a different story.

It's just that we know what we have with Thanasty, and it's not much.

If you have that spot to try someone else, you may uncover someone worth giving more playing time

I personally think Thanasis is not an independently valuable NBA player, but in consideration of helping make the 2nd best basketball player in the world want to be here you just accept it and stop your crying. Seriously. For the longest time you only even had 12 roster spots. Now we have 15. And some of you can’t get over the strategic value of utilizing it like we do. But sure, cry about not using it on some Dleague guy.

In what world is Giannis an inmate here? We are lucky to have him and he's the only reason our team has been relevant for the past five years.

Only reason? Care to share what he and the franchise was like pre Bud please and thank you?

Bud took over when Giannis was 22. Prior to that, both the team and Giannis were getting better and better every year.

Giannis was trending towards being an impact player before Bud but it was only after did he turn into an MVP calibre player. To say the team was getting better is quite laughable though.

How many 21 year old MVPs are there? We'll never know if Giannis would have developed into an MVP-caliber player without Bud, but I believe he would have.

The Bucks were flashing signs that they could be elite before Bud. Lineups with John Henson (starting center at the time) performed as the second best team in the league behind only the champion Golden State. That had nothing to do with Henson being great. It was an indication of how much potential the team had and how terrible the bench was that it was derailing a team that should be among the league's best. At the time, I was making posts like this suggesting replacing Thon with any competent NBA player would make a significant difference.

It's easy to forget that Bud's arrival coincided with an overhaul of the roster. The year before Bud arrived, the Bucks' roster featured non-NBA-caliber players playing significant minutes. The 2018 roster was (in order of minutes played):
Giannis Antetokounmpo, Khris Middleton, Eric Bledsoe, Tony Snell (starter), John Henson (starter), Malcolm Brogdon (played 48 games), Thon Maker, Jason Terry, Sterling Brown, Jabari Parker, Matthew Dellavedova, DeAndre Liggins, Tyler Zeller, Sean Kilpatrick, Brandon Jennings, Rashad Vaughn, Mirza Teletovic, Shabazz Muhammad, Gary Payton II, Greg Monroe, D.J. Wilson, Marshall Plumlee

In Bud's first season, Brogdon was fully healthy and they added Lopez which meant Snell and Henson didn't have to be starters. They also added Pat Connaughton, Ersan Ilyasova, George Hill, Nikola Mirotic, and Donte DiVincenzo. So if we give credit to anybody other than Giannis, it should probably be Horst for constructing a competent roster that allowed the team to reach its full potential without being dragged down by G League depth.

That harkens back to my original point of Giannis being the reason the Bucks are relevant. Without him, they would've been a treadmill team with or without Bud.

Personally I don't think there's any bluff. I don't think Giannis has said "keep my brother on the team or I'm leaving". I just think we're being proactive by keeping Thanasis around. It's a relatively small thing to do to keep your best player happy.

I agree, and also, isn't it plausible that the Bucks simply believe having Thanasis around helps Giannis to be at his best?

Would be great if he could be a coach and not take up a roster spot, but it seems like he wants to be a player and has other opportunities to do so.

People are more upset about Giannis choosing the 15th roster spot then they are about Giannis getting to choose who the coach is

Yeah really.

In the era of 2-ways the Thanasis hand-wringing makes even less sense to me.

The Bucks not having more young developing prospects has nothing to do with Giannis having a hype man on the roster.

People have very strong opinions on whether Thanasis or dudes like Georgios Kalatzaikas and Justin Jackson should be the designated bench towel-waver.

Neither will I. I'm at a loss. I don't think anybody here would ever be guilty of know-your-place racism, of an NBA plantation mentality where the players should shut up and dribble, of player-as-GM backlash as in the criticisms often aimed at LeBron, or of Giannis fatigue.

So I just don't get it.

My take on Thanasis taking the 15th roster spot on a vet min.

Great lock room guy and teammate? Yes
Hustles and pushes guys to play and workout hard? Yes
Keeps your generational superstar happy? Yes!!
Lottery ticket player that could maybe eventually pop? No

Seems like a pretty easy choice.

I think there is a disconnect on the different ways a player can bring value to the club. On the court value for the bottom third of your roster is fairly minimal (not talking about recent draft picks that are there to develop)

The percentage of time a bottom third guy turns into a rotation player for the regular season is probably low. The percentage of time a bottom third guy turns into a playoff rotation is extremely low. The percentage of time a bottom third guy turns into an all star level player is significantly lower.

I think guys like Robin Lopez and Thanasty do more for culture/mood and off the court than they will ever contribute on the court. Hard to get worked up about it.
