It's up to the Jets coaching staff and management to realize that Wilson doesn't have the brain power, composure, or finesse to be a high level QB in the NFL. They should cut bait but they probably see the arm and his ability to run and it blinds them.
In hindsight, they should have traded Zach this offseason and kept Mike White as the backup since he had some success last year with this group. But also, I don't think they expected to need Zach for the entire season and planned on having him sit behind Rodgers to learn.
What's funny is while I agree with your conclusion I think I disagree with the premise. It seems like this coaching staff actually isn't blinded by any of the physical traits with Zach and are bubble wrapping him in a way that saves him from himself. They never really let him loose and I actually think he plays better when they do. However he's too inconsistent to be trusted at this point.
The FO has their hands tied until one of these teams decides to tank and makes their QB available via trade. I have my eyes on Minnesota. 1-4 and they have games against the Niners and Packers coming up before the trade deadline. Conceivably, they can be 2-6 and decide that tanking for Caleb makes the most sense given Cousins age. If the Jets can get to 3-4 before the deadline, I think you'd have to aggressively pursue him. There's a lot of winnable games in the back end of the schedule.
The enlarge section is what makes Douglas, et al., look extremely foolish. They somehow thought that Rodgers wouldn't get hurt at 40 years old and they bought into the fallacy of sunk costs with Zach. We'd be 3-2 with Mike White.
