Being physical night in night out should generate AT LEAST 3-4 trips to the line a night when you're a big man. It just speaks to the type of player he is not willing to be. He lives and dies by his jumper and lack of shot creation.
DA is the worst possible fit for us offensively, he is efficient if you look at FG% but that all comes at the cost of 1. clogging up the lane and midrange where our best players operate and 2. terrible screens, terrible court vision and slippery hands. All for his mediocre 18ppg at best, he simply doesn't have the basketball IQ, motor and ball skills to score more than that. On top of that, he's not even that efficient once you consider he doesn't get to the line and he also can't shoot 3s.
He does move his feet very well for a 7 footer on defense but you'd be mad to pay him the max just for that.
Yup.
It was definitely a moment of 'what kinda team do we want to be?' after Beal got here.
Beal and Booker and KD need that mid-range. DA probably could have averaged 13-14 ppg on insane efficiency, and 13-14 rebounds, but he didn't want that.
There's a human element to this -- they probably approached him and asked him how he envisioned the year going, if he was happy, etc.
I still think (as others do) that we should have said eff it, you're on a contract, you need to get out there and rebound and play defense, who cares if you're pouting. When our big 3 is injured, then you can score. Be a team player. Sacrifice.
But I also understand that the relationship was soured. Book was tired of his non-fire. Monty still left his bad vibes, his clueless / passive-aggressive way of spouting platitudes, but not really managing personalities.
The team needed a reset, Nurk was probably excited, Grayson Allen was a good piece. So they decided hey, why risk having a cancer all year, then possibly having to trade for 40 cents on the dollar when we can get 60 cents RIGHT now.
I personally think Vogel will find a way to actually improve our defense from last year, even without Ain't-Him.
KBD is intriuging, Eubanks is athletic and hustles a ton, we got nice perimeter defense coming out of Okogie, Allen and Goodwin.
We just need a big wing like OG and we'd have this thing in the bag.
Lots of stuff to be excited about, and I hope this board can stop all the whining and toxic blaming.
