No he didn't. The Cubs offered to make him the highest paid manager. All it would have cost MA to match is $2.5 million.
The Cubs offered Counsell a deal worth over double what any current manager makes. Mark offered to pay Counsell 1.5 mil more than any current manager. That includes 4 time world series winner Bruce Bochy. The Brewers offer was completely reasonable and hardly cheap
It wasn't good enough. That's literally all that matters here.
IF the reports are true that CC was going to give the Brewers the chance to match, then MA went cheap. There's zero defending that.
That's absolutely not all that matters. There is a lot of nuance here that you are ignoring. The Brewers felt comfortable enough to make Counsell the highest paid manager in MLB by 1.5 mil, but they didn't feel comfortable giving him a deal worth double what any other manager currently makes. That doesn't make them cheap. Nobody would call Steve Cohen cheap but he also got outbid here. The Brewers didn't lowball Counsell here
Coach Drew: "Milwaukee has always been a team that I have been intrigued by. When we played them, they were a tough team for us to play. Although we did beat them all four times"
