He still does not actually play baseball on the field.

Hire another guy that is wise in the way of analytics and can relate to players.

This. The Brewers absolutely can't compete for the best players because they're all making $30-$50 million a season.

They absolutely can compete and pay for the best management. MA just failed at the very simplest thing he could do.

No he didn't. The Cubs offered to make him the highest paid manager. All it would have cost MA to match is $2.5 million.

The Cubs offered Counsell a deal worth over double what any current manager makes. Mark offered to pay Counsell 1.5 mil more than any current manager. That includes 4 time world series winner Bruce Bochy. The Brewers offer was completely reasonable and hardly cheap

It wasn't good enough. That's literally all that matters here.

IF the reports are true that CC was going to give the Brewers the chance to match, then MA went cheap. There's zero defending that.

Curious what Attanasio will say. He is being killed too.

Does anybody actually know him? Like he is he a ****? He has been here 20 years and can’t say I have heard a ton of negative stories about him but maybe its just been under-wraps.

Counsel took the highest offer, it wasn't in Milwaukee, and all it would have cost the Brewers is $2.5 million more. That's f*cking nothing.

That's absolutely not all that matters. There is a lot of nuance here that you are ignoring. The Brewers felt comfortable enough to make Counsell the highest paid manager in MLB by 1.5 mil, but they didn't feel comfortable giving him a deal worth double what any other manager currently makes. That doesn't make them cheap. Nobody would call Steve Cohen cheap but he also got outbid here. The Brewers didn't lowball Counsell here

Yes they did! At least two teams thought he was worth more. By definition the Brewers low balled him.

Nah, offering Counsell 1.5 mil more than any other current manager is not a low ball offer. That is a very fair and reasonable offer.

It's pretty clear to me that something happened with Mark behind closed doors that made Stearns and Counsell both want out.

No one gives a **** if it was a fair and reasonably offer. There's no salary cap for managers in baseball so you're worth what someone is willing to pay you. CC was worth $8 million a year and he reportedly felt responsible for resetting managerial pay. If MA is too stupid to see how easy this should have been he needs to get the **** out of ownership. This was a goddamn layup.

I think the Mark A bashing over this is off base but whatever, I understand it's the easiest thing to default to. I actually think there's some more interesting conversation to be had as to whether Counsell is even worth resetting the market for. I think he's a great manager and I was a huge supporter but highest paid of all time, double any other manager? He can't physically play the games for you.

This was my first thought when I saw the Cubs. As a fan - F-him. As a human being, I totally get it. You only get so many opportunities and Milwaukee is probably headed downward while the Cubs will have a ton of money. Good career and personal choice.

I don't scour the web for stories about him but I dont think there's much out there that's bad other than meddling a bit back in the day. Seems pretty standard rich owner stuff. There's a contingent of posters that try to make him out to be cheap and overly stingy but I dont really see that at all.

You admit it was a fair and reasonable offer but then also call Mark A cheap. You are completely ignoring nuance. Is Counsell a great manager? Yes, is he worth setting a record as the all time highest paid manager? I'm not sure. But I can't be mad at ownership when they literally offered to pay him more than anyone else.
