If the Panthers can do that Young will be fine.
Just as a general rule I would not draft a short QB. Young is only 5' 10". There have not been many success stories for QBs shorter than 6 foot in the modern NFL. There just haven't. Maybe he breaks the mold once Carolina can get him sufficient weapons. But that could take years. Stroud is 6' 3". I would have drafted him instead of Young based on height alone. I think Carolina is going to regret the Young pick every bit as much as Bears fans regret the incredibly stupid decision to trade assets to move up and grab Trubisky.
The decision, even if it doesn't end up working out for them, is still nowhere near the head scratcher that was the Trubisky play. Young atleast has the body of work in college and was a top prospect QB in many peoples eyes.
Mitch on the other hand, had almost no body of work. Couldn't even beat out a non-NFL caliber QB for the starting job at North carolina. Plus the trade up, by absolutely everybody in the know, was completely unnecessary as nobody was taking Mitch #2. In a media world where everybody and their mother gets their opinions aired, be it on TV or online, even places like here, it was almost universally agreed that the Mitch trade up/pick was awful. Very few liked it in real time without hindsight. Much like the Doug Mcdermott trade up with the Bulls. With hindsight, obviously Mahomes was the correct call. But even without, Watson was a WAY better prospect than Mitch.
So to compare simply: Pace tricked himself into trading up (1 damn spot), AND picked a guy nobody else rated that high. While the Panthers were legit bidding against a handful of other teams, moved up 8 spots and took a guy that lots of people rated high.
The end result may end up the same, but theres still time for Bryce to get it turned around. Even if not, one move was bad in hindsight while another was awful in real time
