It's truly hard to believe how personal some are taking this; isn't everyone allowed to have an opinion? Of course we want to be wrong & hope RJ turns into a perennial all star. He could play great the next 2 weeks & average 25ppg, and I would still want to trade him at the end of that stretch; not because I don't like him, but because he hasn't proven he can do it for long enough stretches. His career has shown that he is an inefficient ISO scorer, I'm very doubtful that will change, but believe me I would love to be wrong.

We should build around a backcourt of Brunson and Quickley. Trade RJ, Grimes and maybe Randle

Anyway, I won’t trigger another 10,000 paragraph rant on nature vs. nurture, but suffice it to say I personally think that RJ’s development has been forever stunted by playing alongside another ball-dominant lefty occupying identical airspace.

Rj's lack of development isn't Randle or Thibs fault. He has been given every opportunity to flourish here. He gets a ton of playing time and a lot of touches for the lack of production.
This is what is annoying as hell. It's always someone else's fault, the fans, some ailment, or the new one I heard after playing in SLC - the altitude.

Yeah yeah. Easiest thing in the world is to be an internet critic. Nobody's making a single excuse for RJ. What I'm actually saying is the same thing I've been saying since the July 1st acquisition of Julius Randle a month after RJ was drafted -- the Knicks wishy-washy can't-pick-a-direction bullsh*t is bad for RJ's development and has been from the jump. That's not an excuse for RJ, that's me being an internet critic of the Knick organization who chose (and continues to choose) centering their team around veteran acquisitions instead of top-end draft talent. The Knicks should have traded the #3 pick on draft day or the minute they knew they'd sign Randle. Instead you get this mishmash lineup and a talented kid brought up in dysfunction.

Am I saying he would have been an All Star in another system? No. I don't have a crystal ball. Maybe he would have been exactly the same player regardless of external circumstances. I find that unlikely, but who the hell knows. All I know for sure is that RJ and Julius fit together about as well as Carmelo and Amar'e.

If you're looking for an answer to the riddle of why RJ's production falls off, look no further than the stints when Randle transforms from Waandle to All-NBA Randle. Not-so-bold prediction: We will see a clip later this season of Randle sucking that just so happens to coincide with RJ looking like Star-J again.

I really hope RJ turns it around and has a great season, mainly because I want to trade him before he regresses to normal for next season. RJ out Spida in is a significant upgrade, even if IQ is thrown in.

When we were in the mix for Mitchell 2 summers ago I was hesitant including RJ. Now? No hesitation. I'd offer 2/3 of RJ/Quickley/Grimes.
My lifetime better have a Knicks championship.

Wow... I really thought these Spida talks were a joke, but you guys are actually serious.
Do you really think Brunson/Spida/Randle/Mitch significantly better than Garland/Spida/Mobely/Allen?

The Knicks have given up an average of 130 points over the last 5 games and you think Spida is going to solve for that?
Spida's shooting percentages are back to his career average after going gangbusters last year. The result? A 9th place Cavaliers team.

C'mon guys, be better...

RJ plays half the game without Randle on the court since he subs out for Randle at the end of qtrs . In those minutes he is the same player he is with Randle.....

He is the same damn player on a Canadian team voided of Brunson and Randle.

A few good games followed by weeks of bad games mixed in with a few solid games, that has been his entire career since high school...

I will add that him and Randle don't compliment each other, and they rarely pass the ball to each other.

It's tough because I like the kid. And I feel like if he blossomed into a bonafide star wing (not asking for a 30/8/7 LeBron, but maybe a 25/6/4 Pierce), we'd be legitimate contenders. But I think he's more of a 2nd option on a contending team, and right now we have three 2nd options running the show (Brunson is an excellent closer, not denying it of course). I know he's young, but he hasn't shown signs of becoming an efficient 25-30 ppg scorer with the superstar upside of Ant, SGA, Tatum etc.

Not sure if I'm making sense, just my thoughts right now and it's late. I know he's young, maybe I'm being too pessimistic.

One still very positive takeaway so far for RJ. He seems to have mastered or at least vastly improved his FT shooting which is still big and improves his TS. He made a big 10-12% jump and is still at 85% for the season (88-103).

I'm still hopeful that in some way his 3-point shooting will follow. For players improving there FT shooting like that, usually the outside shot starts to follow at some point.

in his 3rd year? he'll do better. but to say he is "opposite of clutch" when he helps his team win with timely shots all season is b.s.

Disclaimer: I'm a big, big RJ fan.

I absolutely love the FT% improvement. He's getting to the point where he's legit a top 50 guy in FT%, it's incredible, I never had hopes for this, 78% would have been enough for my enjoyment.

BUT: this is not translating to jump shots. He's one of the very worst high-volume jump shooters in the league. In fact, one can argue he's the worst in the league in pull-up jumpers. As long as he doesn't improve this to league average-ish, he won't reach the next level. This should be his #1, #2, and #3 focus in the next offseason.
