You just inspired a new nickname from me for Joe. "regular season Joe".

How many coaches win COTY get fired, get rehired, and become the regular season worst coach?? Monty Williams is the latest example.

In the playoffs is where real coaching is displayed. Or lack thereof. The best Rosters in the regular season can just coast. But when a team gets to the final 4 or 8 playoffs spots, and rosters even out a bit, then coaching and strategies become more relevant. Teams/coaches have far more time to develop gameplans against one single opponent unlike the regular season.

Is Joe a good pre-game strategist?? Does he command good-great respect from his players? Does he adapt well in games?? Does he have a good feel for adjusting on the Fly on offense or defense? Does he throw away a gameplan when something goes wrong?? Does he hold players accountable when they go away from the game plan?

Above are just rhetorical questions for me. Everyone has to look and answer to themselves first.

Other than getting a good position for the playoffs, the Regular season means squat. How many years do we have to go through this?

Um, he's only been a HC for 1 playoff run.

And during that 1 playoff run, he had no offseason to prepare for being the HC (got the job like day before training camp started), had to walk into a locker room of shell shocked players who were in disbelief about what happened to Ime, players who didn't know whether or not Ime would end up back as coach (with Joe back in assist role) once Ime's suspension was over, had to coach with Ime's buddies for assistants, Hardy left for Utah, the top assistant Mazzulla had left to take a college job right before the playoffs (Stoudemire). And the franchise player sprained his ankle on the 1st play of game 7.

Spo didn't do anything in the playoffs until his 3rd season as a HC. Pop didn't do anything in the playoffs until his 3rd season. Mike Malone didn't do anything in the playoffs until his 10th season as a HC. Nuggets fans wanted him fired in 2021, 2 yrs before he won it all:
https://www.change.org/p/denver-nuggets-fire-mike-malone

Spo also just got spanked in the NBA finals. By a coach who Nuggets fans wanted fired 2 yrs ago. And Spo also got spanked in the NBA finals in 2020 by a coach who many fans had never even heard of before the bubble (Vogel).

Spo hasn't won a single title without arguably the GOAT in his prime on his team.

Not saying that coaching doesn't matter but you seem to be overselling it. You also seem to be overselling Spo and overly quick to dismiss Joe, when history tells us that many really good coaches didn't win anything in the playoffs till at least their 3rd year..

Hal,
You're invested in Joe as the Celtics coach who can bring them a Title via the coaching realm.

And Joe's a good coach, just good, as Playa points out, but they will win the Championship by Porzingis/Brown/Tatum overcoming his limitations.

That's where we are at, compare Joe to an NBA Player - Sabonis, a fine regular season player who is exposed in the playoffs or Randle for the Knicks. These are the Joey Ms of the NBA world.

spoelstra, meanwhile has Miami Number One in Offensive Efficiency, because of his talent and ability.

Yeah, gotta credit Mazulla for getting so much out of Porzingas and Holiday when Tatum is off the floor. They didn’t do squat for us from 2017-2022. Just kidding. Mazulla definitely gets credit for getting the most out of White. Naming him the starting PG so early and not changing his mind after Holiday trade has been a game changer.

"Getting the most of of White" ?? The same coach who wouldn't play White in mostclose game finishes over Smart and/or Brogdon.. I think there's a strong argument that joe may have blown us a playoff series by doing that. And possibly even the title...

Yes, another team would likely hire him. Jason Kidd got another shot. No, that doesn’t make him good. The players like him and I’m sure he does a fine job game planning from day to day but his in game awareness and ability to manage real time situations is abysmal. It cost this team games in the postseason last season and it likely will again this season too

He is a pretty good coach. Just has a different philosophy than a lot of “real gms”.

Hal, look at the talent differential. The Celtics should be first because of takent it doesn't mean that Smol is a bad coach or Missoula is great it just means that Spol can only take Miami's talent so far whereas Mazzulla could win a championship if he could really coach.

And your logic that if Spo's team does well it's because he's a brilliant coach but Mazzulla's team does well and they do well despite him seems flawed..

Ugh so many games this season that they won despite Mazzulla and his love of the three pointer, when they should be a post-up team first of all.

Maybe you don’t remember how White played under Udoka. Most here - not me - wanted to run White out of town because he couldn’t and wouldn’t shoot. It’s easy to say now that Joe should have played White more in crunch time last year and he has obviously recognized that error. I’m sure locker room politics with Brogdon and Smart and his extreme inexperience as a head coach last year was a factor.

D. White was one of our top 3 crunch time players statistically last season, so it should have been easy for him to recognize for the playoffs. The fact he couldn't tell White was better than Brogdon and Smart, both numbers wise and with the eye test, was very concerning.

Certainly Denver would have been the favorite. But I always thought Boston, perhaps foolishly, matched up quite well with Denver, and may have a had a pretty good chance. But of course we never had the opportunity so moot point I guess.

Yes. As much as I am not a fan of him, he is still one of the better coaches in the league. I don't want him here because I think this group needs a more experienced coach for the playoffs to win it all.

Coach of the year of 2022 Monty Williams now has a 26-game losing streak to add to his resume.

Are you guys ready for Coach of the Year Joe?

We absolutely were not beating Denver last year.

Certainly Denver would have been the favorite. But I always thought Boston, perhaps foolishly, matched up quite well with Denver, and may have a had a pretty good chance. But of course we never had the opportunity so moot point I guess.

What bugs me is how easily they took out Miami. Really shows how complacent our guys can be, and for as much as I dislike Joe, that's always been a problem despite coach.
