This is classic PR.

When the Knicks traded for Quentin Richardson in 2005 he had 5 years left in his contract.

"Welcoming Quentin to the Knicks family are more steps in the right direction for this franchise," Knicks president of basketball operations Isiah Thomas stated. "Not only does this trade make our team younger and more athletic, but it adds a strong defensive presence to our perimeter.”

We held onto him for 4 seasons hoping his production would match that of his 04 year. It was a disaster.

When we gave THJ 4/71M this is the nonsense that we had to listen to.

“Bringing back Tim to his original NBA home is an exciting time for him and this franchise,” Mills said. “As a versatile wing whose game continues to improve, he will fit right into the core of players that make up a roster emphasizing youth, athleticism, accountability and unselfishness.”

Claiming that you know precisely what the FO thinks of RJ because of a press release is puzzling. We’re not in meetings with them. For all we know the buyers remorse is making their skin crawl.

"For all we know" the front office is desperately thinking about tanking or trading Brunson. See how that works?

If you think they extended RJ to a huge contract a year before they had to, just so they can dump him for nothing a year later, go for yours.

You can believe whatever helps you sleep at night.

Randle's comeback from his bad start is based on excellent bully balling.

He has been poor at choosing when to shoot threes so it is not surprising his 3FG% did not recover.

Randle is a 2 point machine right now. Best that he sticks with what's working.

How do you know what the front office thinks?

The front office is dumb if they think RJ is just going to magically stop being bad though. There are no signs of him improving. Hes the same dude he was 4 years ago. Will go on a hot shooting streak or put some solid games together sometimes, but that shouldnt fool anyone anymore until he sustains it.

RJ is a bad to mediocre defender, passer, shooter, ball handler, rebounder, etc. He is also meh size/athleticism wise. There isnt anything he is good at and can hang his hat on besides shooting a lot and getting swatted at the rim constantly.

Julius drives me crazy still at times, but hes clearly leagues above RJ when focused. Id move on from both of them, but at least theres a chance Julius can be his All Star self in the playoffs. RJ had some solid playoff games, but he was overall still a negative in the playoffs which is sad because thats the best he can do.

In the end, Quickley >>> RJ so we better not let the wrong guy go. Quickley needs to show up in the playoffs too though for sure. RJ is a good lad, but just not talented enough.

How do I know what they're thinking? THEY said it ..This isn't rocket science.

“We are thrilled to announce a well-deserved extension for RJ Barrett, a core piece of our team’s foundation,” said Knicks president Leon Rose. “At only 22 years old, he has elevated his game each season, solidifying himself as a force on both ends of the court. We believe he will continue to improve because of his passion for the game and dedication to his craft. We want to continue to build our team and culture around players like RJ who possess these values and qualities.”

"His numbers are in the company of elite. His numbers are in the company of Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Luka Doncic, and Kevin Durant. They are the only other four players that by the age of 22 scored 3000 points, 1000 rebounds, and 300 three-point shots." - Leon Rose

They literally just gave RJ a contract extension and did it a year early because they believe in what he can become.

Now they're going to immediately dump him right after doing so because Realgm Knicks forum's opinion? If that were the case they would have traded Julius Randle several times a long time ago .....but as you can see, when Leon believes in a player, he is patient and stands by his convictions.

Leon likes RJ and won't trade him unless it's for a clear upgrade, aka All-Star level talent or better.

Cmon now man. You’re posting MSG Propaganda/a PR puff piece. What else is the press release supposed to say when announcing the extension? None of us know what they’re really thinking.

That was 2 seasons ago also, when RJ still had some perceived upside. That ship has sailed. Hes the exact same player he was then. All his fans can do is point to counting stats and his age. Hes played a lot of minutes and taken a lot of shots, but his actual impact is mediocre at best.

We cant bench him now though because hed lose even more value. Just trade him already. Teams wont be fooled by another short hot streak. Also if Leon only wants to trade him for an All Star then he’s delusional as hell.

They extended him right before last season began... That season came and went and RJ was the only person besides Brunson to show up in the playoffs.

We're not even halfway through the next season and all of a sudden they completely reverse position and just trade him for nothing to appease the realGM Knicks forum posters?

Come on man.

In this matter, my opinion may not be the popular one but it's the correct one.

Let's make a sig bet that by the trade deadline RJ will be a Knick unless traded for an All-Star.

The Knicks are right below the luxury tax. Fournier's contract is due to expire which will help the books, but if you expect IQ to get a RFA offer of roughly 30 million, that means you likely won't be able to retain Hartenstein - a good player - because of the second apron.

RJ's contract is 109 million of dead weight. It accounts for 18% of the salary cap. It's not an asset, it's a liability under the new CBA. And you're tied for the next 3.5 years.

If you can dump RJ for an expiring contract or a contract due to expire in 2025 (e.g. Bojan), you have to do it, assuming teams would even be interested. Because if you wait longer, you might need to attach an unprotected first-round pick just to get rid of the contract, if that's not already the case.

Most teams aren't fooled by a few good scoring games. They know he was a massive liability in the Heat series. The data is loud and clear about this, and they have access to that data. They know he has been bad for the last 2.5 years. Most likely a desperate franchise will sell themselves on his perceived upside as a 23 year old. Or an organization that can afford to overpay for a 25+ million for a bench-caliber player.

The contract is an issue because it will prevent the Knicks' ability to retain or acquire players who are better than him. The CBA is much more punitive so you have less room for error with these contracts.

And Brunson will be eligible for a massive payday in 2025. So they will also have to account for that. RJ's 28 million will be a major problem then.

RJ's extension is really the gift that keeps on giving.

Sorry bro but I had to bump this post lol.

RJ is gone now, and it wasnt for an All Star but a way better fitting starting wing. OG isnt perfect but he’s a championship piece with his defense.

We can all stop our fighting for a few minutes…. until Donte vs Grimes, Hartenstein vs Mitch, and OG/Precious vs IQ/RJ really take off.

All-NBA player... All-star. Semantics. You get the point. OG is All-NBA.

Yes, glad the fighting can cease til we find our next reasons for civil war.
