Why can't we just fkn have the best center tandem in the NBA? Let's see if we can get to the ECF during Mitch's and iHart's contract.

We can't afford to spend $30 million a season on 2 centers, it's going to be one or the other. You pick the one that stays healthy.
Why not? Keeping both won't put us into the super-tax this summer, and we're hitting it next summer when Brunson & Randle get new deals whether we keep Mitch or not
Only argument I see to move Mitch is if he's definitely out for the year, and our FO really wants to go for it this year without spending the ammo we'll need if a top 10 guy becomes available. Then there's a case for swapping Mitch for someone like Gafford...who's not as good as Mitch, but is healthy and a little cheaper.
But the money is there to keep them both past this season.

The Knicks have 2 high impact quality starting centers for the price of one and even if they max iHart with every incentive they can to keep him they still have one of the more reasonably priced and effective starting center duos in the league. In the next two seasons Mitch goes down to $14/$12 last two years respectively. Give iHart $16 to start and then up it's still middle of the pack cost and stacked with 2 starting caliber players, both have shown to be able to change the game with their play.
Pay the man!!!
Even if you hate Mitch you can't deny the idea of him as the off the bench blockness monster in support of a blockenstein monster gives the Knicks one of the scariest center duos in the league.

Looking at your list, most teams do not have expensive backup centers at all though. If they do, they’re usually able to play the 4 as well for more versatility (Portis, Horford, Reid, Okongwu). Most of the money is tied up in the starters. The cheaper starters are either on rookie contracts or due for a raise soon.
Mitch or Isaiah, whoever comes off the bench, would be the highest paid backup in the league, and we’d be paying 30+ million a year on 2 strict centers who cant play together (until Isaiah starts wetting threes). That’s not that much money total and could be worth it since they’re both very good, but doesnt seem like the best use of cap resources or a situation Mitch and Isaiah would be cool with forever.
We’re seeing Isaiah blossom with increased minutes. He has more room to develop compared to Mitch, who hasnt improved much at all and doesnt look like he ever will, so we need to nurture Isaiah’s game primarily with at least 28-30 mpg to see where this goes. Would Mitch be okay with playing 18-20 mpg off the bench then? I dont think he would. Basically he and Isaiah would need to switch roles and minutes.
Why would Isaiah re-sign just to play 20 mpg again when he can start and get paid elsewhere, unless he loves it here that much? Nobody is asking this question. He’s got the taste of starting now and knows he can do it.
There’s some cope and denial going on when it comes to Mitch. Hes the longest tenured Knick, our draft pick second round steal, a great defender/rebounder himself, and a likable fella but I highly doubt we’re going to keep him and Isaiah. They’re both starter quality and just hitting their primes, so it’s not fair to them.
If they’re okay with splitting minutes down the middle then alright, but we only need a backup 5 to give us a good 10-15 mpg off the bench. Thibs is even using Julius at the 5 now with OG. The fact is picking up OG and Isaiah breaking out has made Mitch more expendable. We should trade him for a more versatile forward/big if Isaiah keeps this up.

So many other teams are screwed if their starter goes down, the Knicks have proven that the two headed monster with two starting quality players which fill the role required is a strength of theirs. That's why cost shouldn't be viewed individually but collectively with the benefit of flexibility.
These two guys are such good friends, I don't think there would be any friction about who started and who backed up. Plus Mitch will be coming back from an injury and like last time it will probably take half a year for him to get back to where he left off.
There's no reason for him to complain about coming off the bench while recovering and iHart starts, Mitch can come in and wreak havoc for 20 mins a game. He's paid, he loves being in NY and he's great friends with iHart, it just seems like a rare opportunity for a special combination of guys.
I see it is a huge plus having these two guys because either can play starter minutes. The Knicks would be prepared for injury, foul troubles, match up adjustments with one being more defensive oriented and the other more offensive oriented but both help on both ends.
Plus Mitch eventually becomes a nice trade piece as he comes back healthy and turns into an expiring contract. While, iHart brings more continuity and dependability over the next 4 years if resigned. It's a very unique approach, but I think it's a great chance to settle the center spot for years.

I’m not sure how well he’ll buy into a bench roll. The fact that ihart can at least hit that little 8-10 ft push shot and is a good passer and looks to make plays already makes him much more valuable as a starter compared to Mitch. He elevates our offense more than Mitch elevates our defense. This is considering ihart continues at this level defensively of course.

Possibly yes, there are only a 7-8 teams with salary cap space to offer Hart more.
