IMO, Shanahan easily has the best schemes, play calls, and game plans. He and his staff have coached up this team-- with a lot of key players being mid-round or late-round picks-- to become elite. Why should he not be given the award when he clearly has the team performing the best?
Looking at winners of past COY awards you have guys like Brian Daboll, Kevin Stefanski, Matt Nagy, Jason Garrett, Ron Rivera... it seems seriously out of touch with what coach actually proves he is the best.
Should the COY of the year award always go to the coach with the most talent on his team? Or should it go to a coach who did the most with less?
Personally I look at what DeMeco Ryans is doing in Houston and there’s no way that award should go to anyone else. They were expected to be challenging for the top pick again this year and instead there’s a chance they finish with 10 wins and winners of the NFC South.
